I joined today to ask for help compiling a checklist for a 97 convertible. I would've asked yesterday, but this site didn't come up on google searches. (might want to edit meta tags)

Anyway, its 1-owner, 160k, AT. I know there was more sound insulation starting in 96. I'm asking for any common problems, quick/temp/bad fixes(that they may have applied), info on inspecting the top, problems that appear only when driving, anything YOU would look for in buying this car.

leaks is the most important. the rear windows falling apart, and the side drains clogged and drownning your rear ..

other than that is the same as a hatch or coupe.

save the hassle and get a hard top. Unless you must/want convertible.

I love mine, would not change. but then again, i dont know your intentions.

The auto trans on our convertible started slipping around 165k. Not saying that particular one will, but I'm always leery of high mileage automatics.

I prefer GT, non-convertible, but there are no decent ones in the area. For the trans slipping, is there consensus on the causes?

So, what are the issues to look for on hatch/coupes?

First off Welcome to the site. smile.gif

If it is a 97 limited edition vert, make sure the badging and floormats are in tact and in decent shape, all that stuff is
not available for replacement. There were only 1500 LE verts made, at least that is what toyota is claiming.

Well with coupes or hatches, it's a hard top so you DON'T have to deal with the soft top, leaks, rear window getting messed up, rear window motors not working. There is nothing particular with the hatch or coupes, they all will get the normal rust on the doors if you drive in the snow and rain, and also if you have a stock antenna make sure the drain hose is not hanging in the rear quarter panel because it will rot out the bottom of it. There is a hole that it should go through so that the water drains properly.
