so when i start my car, usually on cold days, i hear kind of like a mix of scratching and rattling in the engine bay. I say scratching cause i found out that when i press the clutch the sound goes away. When I let go it comes back. Now this is only when i start the car and it goes on till i drive. After driving it's not present. Since the sound goes away when i press the clutch i was guessing somewhere along the "Clutch disk rubbing on the flywheel" area. Any input will be greatly appreciated thanks.

when you rev the engine in neutral over 2500rpm does the sound happen??

No surprisingly not. The sound goes away.

sweet as. Could be the thrust bearing(?) Not 100% but I have a similar thing happening on my car, started very quietly and started to get louder, happens now whenever i change gears over 2500rpm and mainly when warm. Changed the clutch, machined fly wheel and installed new thrust bearing etc but still makes that sound, I think its the main engine bearing. Good Luck!!

so the rattle on your's also went away after a drive or when you rev it when it. When it first started happening i mean.

Na it got worse when revved or had been driving for a while, it was quiet at first so i didnt pay it much attention

From personal experiance from the symptoms youve listed, i have dealt with loose pressure plates bolts to a bad bearing, to a destroyed bearing. All have caused symptoms that you have mentioned...Have you tried to "look inside" the bell housing to see if anyting could be amiss. I once did that and saw metal shaving everywhere.

i havent looked inside the housing yet. but i wouldnt be surprised if i saw the same thing you did. If the clutchdisc is burnt can it still be repaired or would it be better to just grab a new one? I know i can just remachine the flywheel. Kinda sucks i just got my clutch changed a year ago

My clutch is also dying after less than one year, less than 20.000 km. It's been doing that every time since I bought the car, in 2008. Third clutch kit in 2 years, all of them different brands (first Valeo, then some F1 sports kit and now Aisin - which is also the original "equipment" as far as I know).
If I'm going to buy a new clutch kit, I really have to do something about the flywheel as well... the original, brand new flywheels costs a fortune, so it's out of the plan. An aftermarket sports clutch+flywheel kit would be also very expensive, since I'm planning an engine swap this summer (which would mean not being able to use the clucth/flywheel kit anymore). So, for a few months only, I want to choose the third way - repairing the clutch disk and pressure plate + remachining the flywheel. What I didn't understand - being the main reason for this off-topic reply - is: what is this "remachining" thing and what operations does it involve?

I think the symptoms you are describing, Goonter, is a bad throw out bearing.

remachining pretty much means grinding your flywheel so that the surface the engages the clutchdisc is even. You can also remachine Brake rotors and all that jazz. a local shop should be able to do this for you for cheap. $20 here if i remember correctly.

God damn, It was kinda obvious with the whole "pressing the clutch and the noise goes away" thing but i just had to make sure. Thanks. so with all that scratching between the disc and the flywheel I'm guessing im gonna have to remachine the flywheel then huh? frown.gif . I'm assuming there's burn marks all over.

Not sure. My mr2 has the same thing, scratching/whirring noise until you depress the clutch. I suppose we'll see what kind of damage it causes here in a month or so.

the thing is that my sound originally went away too when i pressed in the clutch but it wasnt the throw out bearing

worn input shaft bearing... you need to remove and open the tranny to change the front and rear input shaft bearing.. i have the same issue and my ST tranny (C52) is open on the floor of my garage ... if you have some puller and a press you can do that in two days... i have some pics if you want just let me know

Thanks alot for the info! I was thinking I would need to reballance the flywheel too.
