Guys, it isn't hard. Go into your engine bay, pop the shift cables off the transmission one at a time (so you don't somehow find a way to cross them), gut the bushing in the cable end, install brass bushing and the c-clip, and put it back on the transmission. there is your how-to. Really? That easy? Thanks a lot -------------------- taking too long to mod since '09

Yes, it really is that easy. If you've never seen the bushings, the job seems daunting. But once you've located exactly where the shift cables attach to the transmission and you've seen how simply it's all put together, you'll realize you really have nothing to worry about. Pull a tiny pin, remove the old rubber bushing (assuming it doesn't fall out on its own due to age,) put the new bushing in, reattach the shift cable, put the pin back in. Done. The hardest part about the whole job is remembering where you put the tiny pins.
Edit: OP, I found a couple of posts that will be of benefit to you. There is a difference between a short shifter and a short throw shifter, if you want a short shift cut your shaft and reweld it. If you want a short throw weld any type of extension to the underside of the shifter. The longer the extension the shorter the throw. the short throw won't look all that much shorter because you have to put the assembly on risers so you don't hit on the bottom. it's designed shorten the throw, not necessarily the height of the shifter. if you want a short throw/short shift stick, get a cheap ebay one, cut a bit off the top portion then weld it back together. now you have a shorter throw (distance between gears when shifting) and the shift stick now looks shorter.
all i can say is i love mine and most people who have been in my car have made comments about it. best 30 bucks spent IMO. You could, but honestly just buy a 7th gen short shifter from ebay and install that. If you hack the stock one then there will be no way to go back unless you buy another shifter.
Ebay short shifter + brass shifter base bushings + brass shift cable bushings = great shift feel. -------------------- 1991 MR2 - T-tops - Crimson Red - Gen3 3SGTE - Lots of money

I got mine from twosrus.com, which are from speed source.
You can also get them on ebay cheaper, but I think it's better to spend a little more and help the toyota community. -------------------- 1991 MR2 - T-tops - Crimson Red - Gen3 3SGTE - Lots of money

Ebay short shifter + brass shifter base bushings + brass shift cable bushings = great shift feel. with all due respect, i give myself more credit at cutting/welding than worrying about messing up SO BAD that i cant even fix the original. plus, i literally have NO money to buy even the cheapest ebay one. cuz right now putting that thirty dollars in the tank is more important since i physically cannot fabricate a tank of gas. i can, however, fabricate exactly what they have for sale. -------------------- I went full retard once, too.
