regardless of how cheap we paid for it i have the right to show my concerns (complaints) for the poor welds.. its not just a matter of how well the product performs, it is also how well the product was made. i got this downpipe so i would never worry about having to get another one, unless i do a turbo upgrade..

as for the "tiny weld" it looks like it is more or less about 3 rows of crappy welds the look as though they were trying to fill in a good size gap.. and on the outside of the pipe there is a section where i can clearly see a lack of penetration, and can just barely see the actual metal b/c the HPC couldnt fill the small crevice.

i'm curious if you're a certified welder or not.

the only way to know for sure would be to NDI the welds....so you'd have to strip it down to bare metal for a quick test...either dye penetrant+UV light or eddy current or x-ray...then clean it off and re-finish it.

while that may look iffy for welds in my line of work, for the intended application, it should do just fine imo.

if it does fail, then I don't think getting a new one would really be an issue for Berk.

The both of you bring up good points. I guess we will just have to see in the future how everything turns out...if anything does go wrong, lets hope it's within the one year warranty period so it can be replaced.

Any pressing concerns should be addressed to berk technology, just to keep this thread clean and civilized. Let's not start a debate now...haha

i'm not really bashing your knowledge, just trying to get a handle on where your coming from.

I currently work turbine engines and worked alongside the metals tech shop(machining/welding) for the last 5 years, where i'll be transferring into shortly. And I still don't know everything there is to know about it yet...even after getting certs in aircraft maintenance and a degree in aeronautics.

welding takes years to get to a level where you can fail or pass just by looking...i've seen it happen first hand.

and I don't think sheet metal welding is the same as manifold welding

the joint isnt flat and there is a small section there is a lack of penetration. even a visual inspection of the weld would be a fail.

if you guys arent satisfied how about just take it up with berk and get your money back, im happy with my purchase and for the price paid. like said, its a downpipe which is exhaust side, i really doubt we will have any problems with these pipes.

Thanks for chipping in Kellen. I second what you said.

I would appreciate any further discussion about certification be done in PM, just to keep this thread clean and civilized. Let's not push this any further.
Discussion about the product itself is welcomed but please respect different opinions wink.gif

Does anyone know how effective the ceramic coating is?
My sports cat has ceramic wrap and I can touch it when engines warmed up. Was hoping I dont have to wrap these as well.

^^good question. I would guess wrapping isn't necessary when it is already coated but it never hurts to go bigger

im pretty sure if u wrap the pipe after the hpc the warranty will be void.. if u wanted to wrap it u prolly should have just got the standard pipe..

thats my point. I bought this because I didn't want to wrap it. The wrapping always get wet and I have to wait for it to warm up and dry off before driving or it'll steam like a bitch when I'm driving.
Space is tight too. Very close to my rad fans when I have wrapping on my existing sports cat which is why I went for this DP.

the is a mount for an oil drain tube that unbolts and the dp mount squeezes in between the block and it.

once u put the pipe on u will have no problem figuring it out.

yeah thats what i figured but i couldnt get the drain tube to budge. it wouldnt move enough to get in under so i just made it work lol longer bolt and i put it on top.
