I would LOVE it to be Toyota but I would accept it as a scion. Guess what I'm saying is worst case scenario, make it a Toyota.

It's not the badge that worries me, it's what Scion stands for. Firstly, it would be silly to make it anything other than a Toyota because FT-86 pays homage to the AE86...and also stands for FUTURE TOYOTA. Every other 16-18-year-old drives a tC not because it's such a good vehicle, but because it offers the right amenities at the right price. In short, a Corolla for people who aren't close to dying. I don't want as fantastic of a promise as this concept to be ceded to Scion, I want a Toyota badge on this bad mother****er. A turbo boxer is welcome, along with some blue ovals and random stars. So you dont mind if it's badged subaru but you mind if it's scion? |

Subaru at least has a more positive image associated with it; older (mid to late 20s) males who buy their own cars as opposed to the "Scion demographic" - late teens to early 20s driving the car mommy and daddy bought them like it's a race rocket. At least, that's how it is in my area. I live in a predominately military town so we have a ton of STI, Camaro, Mustang, and Evo driving military personnel and then a large amount of "boy racers" in Civics, Eclipses, and tCs; the only group people complain about more than the daredevil GIs is the street racer punks in the tCs. Scions get a bad rap because of the people that drive them...but the cars don't help them much either. -------------------- Has no more Celicas

Scion doesn't have a " negative " image, it jsut has a younger image, as is aim to a younger crowd, but the one thing I haven't seen pointed about Scions is that the price is " fixed ", dealers can't hijack the price at their will like they do with almost any other brand. remember when the GTR came out ? MSRP was one price but the actual retail was like 20K over that. it eventually came down, but still subject to whatever your dealer want to charge you.
if it does come out as a Scion, at least we'll know the actual price and not have to pay extra in order to get the one parked at your local dealer. do I wanna see a toyota badge on this ? yes will I swap teh Scion badge for a Toyota one if needed to ? yes -------------------- |

Scions get a bad rap because of the people that drive them...but the cars don't help them much either. I understand that completely, I'm not thirlled with many Scions I have seen to this day. But still, thats what OTHER people do with their Scions, that's what OTHER people think about Scions..I guess if you care that much what OTHER people think about YOUR car.. which you shouldn't because this car made you happy up until it could possibly be a Scion...it just honestly seems kind of ignorant to me that everyone would drive the EXACT same car branded as Toyota but not Scion because of what they percieve people are thinking about them. LOL, why's it matter so much? You think people are only making fun of the "boy racers" in Civics and Scions? Hell no, people make fun of anything and everything. All Im trying to say is if anyone makes fun of your Scion, why do you even care what that person thinks? They obviously aren't even car saavy enough to realize Scion IS a youth oriented branch of TOYOTA, so why do you even care at all about their opinion? "Boy racers" don't have to drive scions or civics bro..they drive WRX's, they drive BMW's, they even drive CELICAS! It doesn't matter what brand the car is...it's who is driving it and what the person looking at it (who you probably don't even know) percieves it as, which is up to you and how you plan to modify it and drive it around on the street. -------------------- 2006 BMW 330i - 6 Speed - Dinan Stage 1

Oh, I don't care if it's a Scion because other people will down it...if I cared what other people thought about my car I wouldn't own my Celica; it's pretty much a girl car in the circles I frequented and the guys I know all live and die by Hondas and Nissans. I'm personally not concerned with what other people think but I'm saying that is one of the big reasons people will not want it to be a Scion.
I would just prefer it to be a Toyota because that's what it's going to be everywhere else in the world and the damn thing looks like a Celica and since the Corolla nameplate is currently taken, Celica would be a perfect marque to revive. That's what I'd want but either way it doesn't matter what the badge says because I'm buying one...as long as it's specced right. Either way, Scion or Toyota...it won't matter when I'm signing the check and walking out the door with the keys. They can't call it a Celica. As far as I know there is a law for auto makers in the US that sports cars are designated so by having a letter and/or number name instead of a legitimate name... which is why the Miata went to strictly MX5 and the Integra went to RSX, etc.

Chevorlet Corvette & Camaro? Ford Mustang? Dodge Challenger? All the ones I can think of. The American ones may be old, and that's why they retain names, but the Genesis coupe is only 2 or 3 years old. -------------------- taking too long to mod since '09

Idk. That's what I heard. I don't know if it's strictly imported cars or if there are stipulations to it. I'll go digging and see what I can find.

Doesn't make sense to me... "Yeah man, I love my Celica." "Yeah, man, I love my MKII GTR Q-Spec Y." I'll take the first one This post has been edited by HectortheRican: Mar 21, 2011 - 5:29 PM -------------------- taking too long to mod since '09

So cause they cost more and are faster they're not boy racers? or is it because they're military men? i dont get it. And I'm not instigating crap here or anything, but the only Scion rant i hear is always from Americans. From where i am i dont see any "boy racers" Scion drivers at all (there's barely any scion here though -_-) . And I've had more experiences with middle aged bad drivers than teens. |

No, no Goonter that's not the point I'm making. In my area most of the "car nuts" fall into those two categories if you talk to locals; GIs in faster, more expensive vehicles and then teens/young adults in less expensive vehicles - they both have dangerous, reckless drivers that get into accidents, street races, and cause disturbances. They also both have smart, good drivers but they're lumped into the lowest common denominator - the young guys as boy racers and the military guys as stupid GIs. And I'd assume the only Scion rants you get are from Americans because the vast majority of the things are sold...in America; for almost 9 years here in America and about a year in Canada. I see I've struck a nerve here with my observed opinion as to why less people want it to be a Scion than a Toyota but it's nothing personal guys. -------------------- Has no more Celicas

If it's a Scion, it'll be cheaper but you can bet you won't get the performance numbers that are currently being posted. I'd rock it as a Scion as long as it still looks like this. However, all things considered, if this car is released as a Scion, I believe I'll wait for the Subaru version.

Naming conventions are limited only if they are trademarked. At best even if there is a criss cross switcharoo going on then manufacturers sue each other (as in case of Ford suing Ferrari formula 1 team for naming their 2011 model f1 car a F150). In the end lawsuit was dropped and name adjusted. Bugatti was bought out by a company and revived so no issues there. Same apply to other brand revivals.
I have been peeking around ft86club forums and many people are indeed talking about rebadging. I dont know guys... there is a reason why a duck is a duck and a goose is a goose. Everyone will know what you are driving so changing a badge will not make it otherwise. On the other hand if you significantly modify your car then people would have no idea what you are driving and then it is ok to re-badge. At this point in time there are no bodykits available for the car so it is hard to say what is what. Buuuut if this car is weak as hell when it is put into production then no amount of spoilers and bumpers will compensate for how silly that car is. Assuming ft-86 is put into production and assuming it has some umpf I would hope that there would be bolt on turbo kits or superchargers available when car goes on sale. -------------------- Captain Pessimist

As long as they release it with the same specs that they posted, i wont give a damn if it's scion. a badge is a badge. To each their own right? Hyundai genesis is 300 hp and is pretty cheap but i would never get one. Why? just not my type. I want the FT-86 for my own satisfaction not for other people to enjoy. Now if the car was a piece of sh1t to begin with then that a whole diff story. What we do is what makes us who we are. HooooooooooooH that's some deep sh1t LOL!

Definition of how good the car is is often swayed by peer pressure. If public perseption is such that a car sucks then it will always carry that stigma no matter how much you like the car. Prime example many members here do not like civics even though it is a pretty good car in itself
