I'm reading the TWM instructions posted in Batman's 7th gen shifter install thread, I found them here.
Anyways I have a spare shifter base so I thought I might try my hands at removing the stick but I cant get the pins to budge, and judging by whats in those instructions, mine looks different to the USDM one... -------------------- Mike W

You sure you tried prying off those clips? They look pryable... And it looks like you have a second rear clip as well. Weird. Haha

I installed a TWM shifter last year in my car (ST205) and I also noticed that the JDM shifter is different than the USDM one.
You will need to pry off those circle clips, then you will be able to use a punch and an hammer to take the pins out. I also had to break the white plastic part that holds the shifter arm, it's no big deal if it's not there. |

I tried doing this install also (on my JDM GT-Four) just to find out that the shifting assembly is different and it won't work. There is no place to attach the "white plastic upsidedown L arm" to the shifter. That part is needed to outline the gates for your gears.
I spent a long time trying to pry off those circle clips...you will need an xacto knife to squeeze in between the clip and the body of the shifting assembly...once you get in, you need a thin flathead screwdriver and hammer it in, working around the whole clip...then use needle nose pliers to pry it off....to remove the pins you need to hammer them out...if you remove the rubber tube on the left side of the smaller pin, you can use locking pliers to get a grip on the pin to pull it out, as it has a pattern cut into it....and after alllll that work I did...i finally noticed it won't work (b/c of the white L arm thing)...put it all back together..and sold my 7th gen shifter.... So to save you the trouble...don't do it. This post has been edited by nammer: Apr 12, 2011 - 11:06 PM -------------------- |

Well since USA guys use JDM gearboxes (ie the S54 from a 3S-GE clip or the E154F from a ST205 clip) they use JDM shifter cables and keep their USDM shifter bases right?
By this logic a USDM shifter base will fit into my JDM car thus allowing a 7th gen short shifter to be used? You guys in Canada might have a market for this, obviously would be harder to obtain the USDM shifter base here in New Zealand (Unless the NZDM 5S-FE model has the same shifter base which I doubt) so that really only leaves us with the TRD option which is NZ$650, the 7th gen short shifter kit is only NZ$99 -------------------- Mike W

the only thing that the white thing that goes to the top and bottom on the shifter does is give the gears a notchy feel (like a "click" feel when you go into gear) once you put a set of brass shifter bushing in it you will never notice it not being there. i dont have it in mine and it works fine without it. you put a weighted shift knob on it and it'll feel like a dream.

Yeah thats right, When the car is new the transmission is so smooth you wouldnt feel a thing if that wasnt there.
Now my car is so old I hardly hear or feel that click anymore over the crunch of the gearbox anyways. 4th and 5th are my best gears. I guess removing that white thing puts you more in touch with the gearbox as whatever you feel isnt artificial and once you know the car, you know where to put it anyways. The best part is I have a spare shifter assembly so I wont be ruining the one thats in the car, it will just be a waste of $99 if I find it doesnt shift better or if it even shifts at all -------------------- Mike W

So did you end up getting the 7th gen kit to work? The Aussie bases are the same as JDM. I have the kit, but haven't tried fitting it yet.
