The gearbox in the Camry and the Celica are both called A140E. But the guy at the wreckers is saying they're not the same. Who can confirm this?

are you serious? Ok now I have th SH**TS. Cause I found Camry boxes for $200 and had to shop around for ages to find a Celica Box for $330. Most of them wanted $400 and up.
I considered doing a manual conversion, but was too costly. Was gonna cost around $1,400 installed. Whereas the auto will cost me around $700 installed.

yeah bro the celica and the cam both have the same engine same transmission its just a different car it might be set up to shift different but that all in the computer the only reason they say it wont fit because they see it as its not the same car so it fit that b.s they say that at every junk yard u go to

Are you doing the swap yourself or are you having a shop do it? Only costed me about $700 cause I did it myself, and I had a full parts car though..
It's pretty easy if you are just going to swap out auto transmissions, you could easily do it yourself if you have all the right tools

Since we're all guessing here,

My guess is they are practically the same, but there will be something on the Camry gearbox that throws a spanner in the works, possibly a different mount, or the speedo drive, or something to do with the ECT-S or even the axels.

But then again the wreckers also tried to tell me a 3S-GE alternator wouldn't fit a 3S-GTE, I ended up saving $250 on a suitable part
