Update

Recently (as in my other threads) my engine overheated, after this I did an overhaul of the cooling system including system flush and heater core flush, replacement of t-stat and rad cap with TRD items and replacement of burst upper hose with blue silicone rad hose set.

After bleeding (or burping) the system at operating temperature (which is now lower due to the TRD t-stat but fluctuates between the new lower temp and the normal temp) I took the car for a hard drive, everything seemed to go fine but soon after the engine started smoking as seen here.

Well after scratching my head and scratching my balls for weeks I decided to drop it into my engineer's shop.

Compression test came up 180,170,170,180 which isn't great, but atleast consistent and tends to rule out the 1 popped water jacket in 1 cylender theory

And a hydrocarbon test in the radiator came up negative so that tends to back up the compression test evidence, so now we conclude (at a guess still) that I have leaking turbo seals.

As this is the 2nd CT to have failed on me, we have decided to go a drastically different route,

The plan

Old ------------> New
CT26 hybrid turbo -> Garrett GT2871RS with the 0.64a/r rear housing
Gen 3 manifold -> New Custom steampipe 3S-GTE - T28 manifold with 44mm V-Band port
Custom 3" DP -> New custom 3" T28 downpipe with 44mm return port

Factory IC will be retained, an icebox will later be plumbed into the system for racing.
Braided teflon oil and coolant hose lines will be made.
Battery will be moved to the boot.
A custom intake and cold air box will be made up.

The choice of turbo was made after much discussion and debate here is what we concluded the GT2860RS Disco Potato would be a downgrade to the CT20b, the 2876RS with it's 4" intake would spool up way too late for my needs so that leaves us with 2871 in the middle ground.

We have decided to add either 38mm or 44mm (I think 44mm will be best) external wastegate ports with blockoff plates for now and just see how the internal gate plays ball, as we can always add a Tial later on and tack up the internal.

Also considering ditching the SSQV bov for a Greddy Type RS plumb back.

Just turned up in the mail

6x T-Bar clamps 1.5" for the radiator

Thought I'd pull one out and test fit it.

They are Turbonetics brand

Received Garrett GT2860RS turbo last week and the flanges and fittings.

Went down to the engineer today to see the progress on my manifold, wish I took a camera redface.gif

Also fitted 1998 late spec High Beams, Couldnt get the bumper to line up like factory again though, It's that bottom screw on each side, on the left hand side I cant get it to sit flush in the recess where you screw it in, it's not noticible unless your looking under the car. Kind of annoying though. There's also a prang in my factory crash support??? Previous owner lied!

Will bring a camera tomorrow. The GT28 is a tiny little thing!!!

Getting close to D-Day

Intercooler waterpump installed today
Intercooler pipe made with nipple for wastegate feed
Battery mounted in boot and wired up

I ended up choosing the GT28RS Disco Potato as it should be a close match for factory fuelling, except with awesome spoolup. *fingers crossed on that one*

I have sent the new custom steampipe tig welded T28 manifold and downpipe along with the turbine housing to get ceramic coated, once they return and are mounted to my engine the intake pipe can be made and a new exhaust made up where i scraped my old muffler.

Holy cow the car is so fast!!!! GT28RS is the sh*t!!!!!!!

Unfortunately no camera, but it looks really good.

Now I have a new problem, It's overboosting at 5000 in 2nd and just 4000 in 3rd, it just keeps boosting so instantly that it reaches 18psi and triggers fuel cut before my eyes can switch from the road to the tachometer to the boost gauge.

Anyone know if changing from the .64 AR rear housing to the .86 will help cure the overboost without introducing too much lag? Or will simply porting the internal gate do the trick?
