superstrut would be more of an advantage on a FWD celica vs AWD celica right?? I currently have helical LSD and wow all I can say is thats its great. I really wish I could have a superstrut suspension, that would make my car a full SS-III. Being that both control arms and figure 8's that go out on SS Suspension cost about $1100 doesn't really make worth converting. I've found a set of tein Superstrut coilovers for about $350 shipped and they seem to be in somewhat good condition.

I don't know if it is more of an advantage on a FWD vs AWD. Both celica's I had/have, were equiped with superstrut. Handling on both of them is great although the st205 is better due to the AWD. Are the superstrut parts expensive? Yes they are, but performance wise, the superstrut is way better then McPherson. The parts last for about 100.000 km. How many years would it take you to drive that many km's? I'll do somewhere between 10 to 15 k/year. That makes 7 to 10 years before the parts need replacement. So that is about $70 a year!!!

Typical replacement is around 80,000-120,000km's. But driving style, suspension set up, alignment and roads driven on can alter that.

HELP moving it with your hands isnt going to put enough force into it, best you can acheive is getting a very long bar and putting as much effort into it as quickly as you can, even then you might not recreate the noise. If you know the alignment is good, best to start with the figure of 8's and if that doesnt cure it move on form there. |

So that is about $70 a year!!! i would say the fwd needs it more, the st205 has a lot of grip to help overcome any handling shortcomings, personally i wouldnt say many celica's as stock have great handling although it depends a bit on circumstance, over less smooth roads my st205 is epic, on the smooth its a bit of a boat (understatement). The superstrut in my st205/ss3 are a whole heap better though than the st182 i had which was a nice car but handling was a sketchy mix of wheel spin and hop, between them i've been using all round doublewishbones for my daily, and now i'm in an st205 the rear end is the only let down the front end is great, to a point, anyone who thinks a stock celica handles well is well, not a fool given they may not be used to better, but celica's handle like crap, that isnt to say the potential isnt there, but honestly celica's handle like a dogs dinner stock, the 7th gen is the only one i've driven which felt like it might actually handle ok, and it has double wishbone rears, so no great surprise. My question is...
What are the parts composing the SSS? And what is the maintenance required to keep them in shape for a long time? greace? anti-rust? |

hmm good points edophus. I would switch to superstrut if the control arms and figure 8's didn't cost over $700 brand new. While I'm on topic about converting, are the SS-II 3SGE Beams Twin Piston Brake Calipers and SS-III 3SGE Beams Dual Piston Twin Piston Calipers the same exact thing??? Are the mounting brackets the same size?? yeah its too much to convert, i wouldnt like to pay new prices, i picked up a decent whole ss setup from a car that was being broken up and its sitting in my garage as a spare set should i need them, cost me about the same as a new banana arm. A good mcpherson setup will be just that.. good, ultimatly not as good as an ss setup, more comprimised but still good, specially with an lsd. tons cheaper also. yeah those brakes are the same. |

ok these are the differences I got between SS3 and GT4 Superstrut Suspension Parts
SS3 Knuckle, Steering Right 43211-20281 ST202 Knuckle, Steering Left 43212-20241 ST202 Bar, Stabilizer Front 48811-20860 ST202 Bush, Front Stabilizer Bar No. 1 48815-20260 ST202 GT-Four Knuckle Steering Right 43211-20291 ST205 Knuckle, Steering Left 43212-20251 ST205 Bar, Stabilizer Front 48811-20880 ST205 Bush, Front Stabilizer Bar, No. 1 48815-20270 ST205 Sway Bar end links have the same exact part number. Of course the Shocks have different part numbers due to different dampening rates between the weight of both celica's. So sway bar thickness : ST205 Celica GT4 is 15mm and also has a different design because it needs to clear the drive shaft to the rear wheels ST202 Celica SS-III is 14mm Otherwise the Lower Control Arm #1, camber contorl link and control arm #2 are the same. Is it possible/worth the money to convert a super strut gt four, to a macpherson set up It is possible... and for the price, all depends if you do it yourself or if you get it done by someone. There's lots of fitting to do and mods to change... Personally, even if I've got the clunk once, I'm wouldn't do the conversion, because it's a unique system and it's fun to use |

So would you have to do custom modification to get the mac struts to work on a gtfour with SS?
Or would it simply be, get the Mac parts, and bolt them into the gtfour with ss? -------------------- -Protection mode, For when your amp tries to blow its load. 1995 Toyota Celica GTS - Daily Driver 1999 Chevy Cavalier - Winter Beater 1994 Honda Civic CX Hatchback - Dead My Celica! |

So would you have to do custom modification to get the mac struts to work on a gtfour with SS? Or would it simply be, get the Mac parts, and bolt them into the gtfour with ss? Honestly I don't know! but it would be logical to me that if you change the whole direction system, suspension and even the spindles. But at this point, you're downgrading your brakes because the GT4 brakes won't be able to fit anymore due to the front wheel drive system. So you'd be to re-upgrade to a braking system you could use on a "normal" celica. At this point you're looking for lots of $$$, either but all this from a front clip, or buy another celica that you'll take all your parts from. So, you've got nothing under 2000$, and if you can't do it and have to pay someone to do it...it's gonna cost you for the time it takes to do this kind of work. So now, I think you better just keep the SSS and just change the parts you need when you'll get the clunk...and from what I've read, the SSS parts lasts for about 100k ( not sure if miles or kms), how long does it take you to reach 100k on a car? 5? 8? 10 years? And, the SSS is SO enjoyable! I'll have a hard time getting used to Macs again on my future cars! (Again, I'm not sure if everything I wrote is GOOD information, if someone could confirm this with me I'd really appreciate!) |
