After 7 hours of racing, it looks like we broke the radiator cap, we thought nothing of it kept on. Whelp, we think the broken cap did not allow the the coolant system to be pressurized, all of the water steamed off, the coolant system dried out, at about 9:30 PM the engine over heated and stalled at about 90 mph on the back straight. We are pretty sure it fried the thermostat, pooched the head gasket, and god knows what else to the block....

Is it possible for a failed thermostat to destroy an engine !?!?

i imagine the bottom end will be relatively ok.

the head, on the other hand, would be cracked or warped i bet

and yup... no pressure on the cooling system = evaporation

It wasnt your thermostat that caused the failure, losing the radiator cap caused the system to loose pressure and of course all the water (coolant) steamed off. chances are the head and block are pretty warped. if the engine stalled out that bad, the pistons are fried and the bearings might be toast

@Smaay, yep I agree... the lack of coolant is what did all the damage, the broken rad cap was the crux of it all... also not checking the gauges... during the driving. Going to have to come up with habit to check the gauges with some kind of cadence or maybe some kind of visual or audio alert to help with that...

I check my gauges as frecuent as I check my side mirrors, but there are gauges that you can setup to make a warning sound + warning light at a desire temperature / pressure. look into those as in real racing your eyes are needed on the front, so a warning light / sound would be a great help for you.

Prosport has gauges with te warning feature, look into those.

Well you do need coolant flowing past the coolant temp sender to get a reading....

pull the hoses off the radiator and look inside the cap, is the plastic brittle, brown, or melted?
