Can anyone give any ideas what can be done to get this car over the edge in Cali. I haven't tuned it up since last year but just changed the oil.
Thanks. Mabey a tune up would do it even though it feels like it is running better than ever.

your CAT is toast! i had the same reading on my 2001 GT-S and i swapped out the CAT and i passed with flying colors. you can get an ODBII CAT on eBay and have a muffler shop just weld it in. this would go down in your exhaust pipe under the car. the CAT thats built into your header is $$$$...now if you are wiling to drive up here, and you have a GT with a 5S-FE, you can borrow mine and do your SMOG up here and then we can swap it back out, thats fine with me. Im up in Lancaster BTW

you need a new O2 sensor, and or a new catalytic converter

that's the only way you can lower NOx ( assuming there is no mechanical issues )

Thanks for the idea smaay. I noticed I have another mini cat or muffler underneath the car is that where you mean and or what is that thing down there do.
As far as mabey my 02 sensors are iffy I had the check engine light come on once a while back but I unhooked the battery and it never came on again(6 months ago). If 02 would I change both or one of them.
I want to fix it since it has been coming together nicely and mabey some more mpg out of it.
Thanks

Edit I think I will change both 02 sensors and give it a go.
Just for reference from amazon

I changed the o2 sensors. One tip is soak the bottom one in PB for at least 6 hours before trying to remove it because it won't budge.
Spray a few times even better and drive, park, drive again. Then it finally broke loose.

My new question is I unhooked the battery and small neg lead for about 30 seconds my car clock was not set anymore but my radio
did not loose memory(usually I have to reset stations). Would this be enough for the computer to reset and do I need to reset to get the new sensors to adjust? The old sensors were very corroded and I don't think they were working properly. I want to go back to smog asap. Thanks in advance. Now
that I think about it I should have pulld both leads off not just neg terminal. Probably another ground somewhere.

I always hear 10 seconds for OBD1 btw.. just seems too... quick for me though, so I let it sit longer.

I have passed now and am very happy but when you say pull those relays last time I tried to pull one they seemed fragile like they were going to crack.
Mabey I need new ones.

Its the EFI FUSE, not the relay. Engine bay main fuse box, 15a fuse, forward most row of fuses, closest to the fender.

Ok good deal/Thx for all replies

I just want to mention the guy at smog said I should only have changed the top one and that the bottom was a waste of money .>

looking at the numbers ( 455 ) you also need a new catalityc converter, you may think you dont need to worry about it since is emissions and you passed already, but a non clogged cat will give you better MPG, smoother engine and a little more power. so I'd say replace it when possible.
