i got to feel for u guys in the us when u go on about speed when here in the uk the gt has ample bhp.
Speaking for myself im perfectly happy with my celica(desmond) 170 odds hp is plenty for some fun infact i just added a de cat pipe and what a difo it made smile.gif..
I would still be happy with it even if it had the st engine it as its such a stunning car to look at ..

Hey ben whats happened to the celica-club site???

Kevstir

see, but the thing is you have 170 hp, and you fine with that.. If could 170hp i would be tickeled happy, ok, let refrase, if i could have 170hp without haveing to spend 6k on an engine swap, yeah.. i guess im an american, but i think il stick with euro's well after this car

Beats me why toyota gave the us market an under powered gt model just doesnt make sense to have such a stunning car with not as much grunt as the rest off the world gets...

yeah, true im not all about speed, im kindda more pissed that i thought getting my celi i would have a reliable car for atleast another 50k, not be burning oil kind bad an have to fix it. like im not crazy about some muscle car, I think its just cause it the only kinda a car i havnt had, in a sence. had a truck a pos beater, an suv, an lux .. bimmer, an now inmport... i really more or less prfer luxury kinda cars, cause i also dont wanna speed as much, i loved my bimmer the style and it was quick, ****, beat all kind's of civics um 2 02 6banger stangs an an 89 5.0 stang an two celi's.... its cruzin, i like cruzin really

Sorry to say it man, but you kinda contradict yourself a bit.

You said that the Celica makes you mad because it burns oil and thats a big problem...but your familys domestics can throw rods and blow transmissions and thats not a major problem. Now, my celica has only ever burned oil once and that was under very hard acceleration which is to be expected, and my transmission is in great shape at nearly 190k with nothing more than routine maintence.

Also, the original complaint was that Celicas are slow as hell, and that you want a domestic like a Camaro or Firebird because theyre fast.....so then you said that speed isnt everthing, and really youre more of a crusing type of person really, but you like to race alot....

I just kinda got confused a little, because im not totally sure where your interests lie. If you want something reliable and great for cruising, go get your Celica fixed so it stops burning oil if its a big problem. Also, trying to race alot on an engne like the 7AFE without tons of care could probably induce some premature oil burning problems. However, if speed is your thing than try to find a nice used Eclipse GST/GSX, Eagle Talon TSi, 300zx TT, WRX/Impreza...the list goes on. But, its all up to personal preference to what suits you best. Maybe an ST Celica just isnt the car for you, but there are other great imports/domestics/euros that will make you happy. Just specify your goals first. wink.gif

I regularly cruise up and down motorways at about 70-80mph for a couple of hundredmiles a day in my SR (7AFE) and I have never burned oil..

Am i right in thinking the reason why your cars are underpowered even though they are a 3sge is due to the exhaust recirculcation and emissions controls ?

We actually have the 5SFE engine in our USDM Celica GT's instead of the 3SGE, while the 7AFE can be found in our Celica ST's.

ive thought about it.... I thought about trading it for an mr2 turbo a while ago. But then i couldnt justify getting an older car. I would prolly get a WRX if the price was about 12,000 for a low mileage one.

I did when my friend with the RSX made so much fun of my car for being slow... but then I realized. If I had put as much money in as his parents gave him for the rsx *stupid rich parents* I would kill his car. And hell mines alot hotter I get all the attention so im like ah what the hell. I debated hard on changin, but lets face it, I dont need to impress girls on the highway by passing em at 110, I would prefer to chill in the parkinlot talkin to friends with my baby smile.gif Besides, I dont need a faster car, why give myself the temptaton, and all that money I save in gas... new speakers... yum tongue.gif

the MR2 just doesnt get the attention the celica got. wether thats good or bad, ill find out later on. but yea, its not the same feeling you get in the car... in the celica i felt i could handle the car very well and felt like i need to tune this car up to my driving level, so i was really comfortable and confident in the driverseat... now i kind of feel i need to tune my driving level up to match the car... i really feel i should have spent a little more time learning on the celica before making the jump into the MR2... but alas i guess ill get used to it.

I've definetely thought about selling my car. I have an ST and it only cranks out 105hp... And sheesh there isn't even a header made for it! But when I'm drivin I hardly ever see a 6th generation Celica. Much less a nice one like the tuners' on this site. But I see Honda's all day, every day, and so the appeal of having one isn't there. Every magazine I pick up has nothing but Honda's and Acura's in it and I get so tired of it.

A tuner is an innovator. Is doing what everyone else does innovative? Are we followers or leaders? Domestic cars are a whole different thing though. If you really want horsepower then yea get a domestic sports car. It'll crank out the power. The Celica is a beautiful looking car and few people have one. But unless you're willing to throw down the green, it's not made for performance.

I'm a bit late for this topic.. but I am on the fence atm. My clutch has gone AGAIN due to ****ty work on it earlier (this heavy duty 1 lasted 10,000k's - ****ing annoying & expensive), and the rust is starting to set in frown.gif

I paid $17.5k AU for her, and the value is really coming down even though she is a fully optioned (-sunroof) ZR. If I sold the car now I could probably get the same price, but only because I have spent $2-3k on her in the last year.

I have saved $5k since I bought the car, & have over $30k in the bank.

Really haven't decided if I'll keep the celi, or trade it in for a R33 GTR/R34 GT-t or a SUPRA RZ/GZ!

PS. K2 Stock MR2's don't get as much attention, but I know someone with a 3s mr2, full midnight purple, custom body kit, and it is a real eye turner.

It kinda bugs me my stock Celi is so slow. But I don't have the cash for a 9k engine swap. But the nice thing about the Celi, is it's a killer daily driver. My red GT is sexy enough to the point where chick look twice at it and the interior is supra like.

As for as speed? Well I have about $4k to kill so it's either boost the celi or a GSX-R 600cc. With the bike I will be an unstoppable chick getting machine. The rest of the money can go to the STD clinic.

If the celica was a fast car (in the US) theres a GOOD chance I wouldn't own one since insurance would be much higher and so would the resale basically making it a car that wouldn't have met my criteria when I was looking for a good used car, so Im glad (mostly) it is the way it is.

Two options

Get a uk or jdm spec celi - 3sge 173 bhp
get a gt4, jdm spec ~ 255 bhp, uk spec ~245bhp

Much, much better then mustang, cos it is designed to be driven properl, not just raced between lights and parked outside schools.

I can't think teh import cost would be that high, £8k will get you a pretty ddamn good gt4 in teh uk, imported.

And yeah just be glad, like ben said you dont have to pay uk fuel prices.

79pence a litre, works out at about £40, or (57 dollars for you americans) to fill the tank (and no the tank isn't bigger!)

The people from UK have risen a very good point. (regarding gas prices etc) Soemone at another thread was asking how come all the good Celicas are in Cyprus. Well you see, the Celica in Cyprus is considered a sports car. Custom Duties and gas prices make it prohibitive to own a car more than 1600cc. And by the way, gas prices in Cyprus are even higher than UK's. rolleyes.gif
As you can understand, there are absolutely NO american cars in Cyprus (except for a few Jeeps some rich people have just for showing off and a Caddilac STS that my uncle brought from the US- but he owns a gas station)

I was definitly considering selling my Celica. I was going to get a Porsche 944 Turbo, or maybe a 300ZX. I decided against domestics, they are too common and not stylish enough for me. But if I were building a dragster, I'd do a domestic.

But speed isn't really everything. I'm more of a tuner. I love to work on cars just as much as I love to drive them. If I took the money I'd get from selling the Celica, and the money that I was going to throw down for parts for her, I'd be able to get a decent, really fast car. But it just wouldn't look as good, and it definitly wouldn't be a drop-top. Not only that, but it'd just be a car then. It wouldn't be a hobby.
