Ever since I bought my Celica there's been a funky clunking/clicking noise coming from the rear of the vehicle whenever I go over bumps, I guess you could call it rattling. I assumed at the time that it was just a loose suspension component. However; I have replace the suspension all the way around and still hear the noise. It is in fact now worse as it comes from both the left and ride side of the vehicle, instead of just the left side. Wondering if anyone else has had this issue and what it was. I'm wondering if it's that lid or the life supports maybe in the trunk area. Another thought is that the spare tire cover back there is not stock, but just some random cut out, the noise sound like it's coming from higher up though and coming from the sides, not in the center.

What kind of mileage is on your car? do you also experience this under hard turning?
sound like it may be the top hat on your strut. if you recently replaced suspension components and didnt tighten this enough that may explain why the other side is now also making this noise check and see the condition on this piece and make sure the gland nut is properly tightened. hope this offers some insight good luck and let us know how it turns out peace -jec This post has been edited by JasonTX: Jan 31, 2012 - 11:07 AM -------------------- JN 3:16

It has a bit over 200K miles on it. The noise does not occur during hard turns, unless it's over bumps of course. I will have my mechanic check it out. I wouldn't be surprised if it is the top hat, they had it on the alignment rack at the tire place 3 times after I had it lowered. Thanks for the pointer.

Could be upper strut mounts.. Or it could be the sway bar end links..

It's your trailing arm bushings. My car does the same thing. You need new trailing arms, also check your lateral arms that go from the outside to the inside of the vehicle to make sure they're not loose.
The way to test to see if it's your trailing arms: -Pull the hand brake -get out your lug wrench and try to loosen and tighten a lug on each wheel, moving both directions -failing arm bushings will move and make a clunk like mine are. I notice mine the most when I take a sharp turn and hit a bump. You'll hear a metal clunk near where the passenger seat is, that's the upper bushing and a rattling near the rear struts where it attaches to the spindle. -------------------- 1994 Toyota Celica GT-S 5S-FE 190k Miles. What's up man,
If you say it's not a suspension try moving your rear hatch up and down see if there is some slack in it. I had an annoying sqeek coming from my hatch, the latch was worn so it wasn't firmly holding the hatch down. The fix? Open the hatch, take the plastic covering from over the latch, remove the two bolts they were either 12 or 14 don't remember. I took a steel bit bremwel tool and extended the bolt holds on the latch in order to move the latch futher down. Put everthig back together and no noise!! |

I will definitely have to check out some of this stuff. Glad to know some other people have experienced this type of thing. Thanks for all the help. You'll be seeing a lot of me on here as I try to learn more about and do more stuff to my Celica.

So it turns out it is the hatch that's making all the noise. Now I just have to figure out how to make it stop. Thanks for all the pointers. Had the mechanic go over the rear suspension twice just to make sure. Thanks again to everyone that gave me suggestions on what it might have been.
