So I got a new job a couple weeks ago. Got my first check yesterday and I am going to be able to save up for it quick so i'm wondering would a 3sgte swap still be decent on gas? I'll be driving an average of 35 miles a day but want something more fun to drive.

I'll be driving an average of 35 miles a day but want something more fun to drive. to be practical, i would suggest that the first thing you do is buy a cheap beater that is reliable. a swapped car is sensitive to routine maintenance, and is likely to have downtime on occasion. can you drive it back and forth? yeah! do you really want to put so many miles on it? meh. it will be "okay" on gas as long as you stay out of boost, but hearing you say you want something more fun, i doubt you can resist! (most of us cant lol) i learned that having a nice DD thats inexensive and reliable is the best way to go cheers! -------------------- |

I have one st204 and one st205. The difference is HUGE. I get such a bad gas mileage with the 3sgte (though it runs a 4wd drivetrain) compared to the 5sfe. I've been using the 3s on a daily basis for about 4-5months now because it's so much fun to ride and god I would've saved SO much money if I went with the 5sfe.
I've always said fun has no price though! |

no thats from driving it. its a turbo car and once you get it you cant keep your foot out of it. another suggestion is a 1MZ. 200HP 200TQ NA and you will get close to 30MPG. my dads Solara gets a tad over 30 on the highway

Thanks guys for the replies. My stock st needs some kick. Haha I think i'll have a look into the 1mz swap. If I end up not doing that I guess I'll just get a second car to deliver pizza in.

I've got a pretty stock 93T MR2, and she gets 25-26 mpg around town, up to a max of 30-31 if all highway.
My 99 Celica's 5S-FE gets...pretty much the same mileage. 26 day to day, 31 highway. At least that's on regular gas, not premium like my MR2 needs. But I second what was said earlier, you NEED to have a reliable (if slow and boring) car to drive when your swap is under the knife. That's why I got my Celica, because right now the front end of the MR2 is on jack stands while I rebuild the power steering. |

I daily drive my 3SGTE and average around 20 MPG with my boost set to around 10 PSI (.75 bar). It's 30 miles each way with about 4 miles of lights and the rest freeway. If I turn the boost up to 14 PSI (1 bar), my mileage drops to the 12 to 15 range for the same commute. The car is AWD though, so there may be some gains on mileage from running FWD. As far as downtime... It's been in the shop for a week waiting on a water pump. The last extended downtime was for a clutch and those bastards took 5 months (extenuating circumstances, but still), lesson learned, I'll use the dealership from now on.

i also have no exhaust, for what it is worth, probably could use a tune too. im running a 2nd gen with a stock ecu ct26 turbo, and s54 trans. i have an apexi avc-r, but it aint set right. besides the boost controller. i have a mishimoto intercooler with 2.25" piping and a greddy type-s. i'm pretty sure it is typical to get about 15 or so mpg.

that is pretty much that one thing why i havent done the 3s yet, stinkin inflating gas prices. We got the highest in the whole nation, if I was bankin' more dough then I'd have no problem. My commute to work is about 25miles and its all mountain/beach area driving so there is NO way my foot is gonna go easy
