The easiest way to tell is to look where the axles slip into the transmission.

Open diff:

LSD:

The open diff has the narrow bar, the LSD is much thicker.

that first pic looks exactly like the factory LSD that comes in 93+ MR2 transmissions.

Is there also a 'spin test' to find out? The trans I just acquired has the thicker bar, yet if I turn one side, the other spins the other way (both in and out of gear).

The test I did with my helical lsd is as follows : you spin the right wheel forward (while the car is in the air)m, the left tire should spin backward!

My open diff did that too. Not really a good test.

go fast around a turn and as your come out of the turn stomp on the gas pedal. And you should be able to come out of the turn really fast( you'l be able to notice your tires hugging the turn)

You can definitely feel the difference there. I was merely remarking on one wheel spinning forwards and the other backwards when the car is jacked up. I was just saying that my open diff would sometimes spin one wheel, sometimes both wheels in opposite directions. I haven't tested my LSD tranny to see what it does.

in need of a clutch kit for the 3SGE Beams motor. I know the hybrid 3sgte pressure plate/clutch cover and 5sfe disc. How about the spline count. I know spec is the only company that already has these ready off the shelf. But all these clutch kits are for turbo application 3sgte. I'll call andy from southbend thanks Smaay

How about using the 1989 Celica GT-S clutch kit. These cars come with 1st gen 3S-GE engines here in the USA. Just not sure what transmissions these come with??? Anybody have the slightest clue?

BEAMS clutch disc and ST185 pressure plate. Part numbers 31250-20331 for the disc and 31210-20351 for the pressure plate.

hmm wow. then to my understanding via toyodiy. 1999 5SFE and 1999 3SGE Beams motor use the same disc plate??? With this 4.529 final drive gear ratio I have an extra 19 more ft lb torque(on paper) than a 5sfe. So the ST185 pressure plate should suffice the extra amount of torque right??

I would imagine the disc can handle it but there are always upgraded 5S discs that can definitely handle it. The ST185 can more than handle the extra torque since the second gen 3S-GTE had 224 lb ft of torque stock.
