Hello,
I just bought my first 6th Gen Celica last week, though I am not new to Celicas. My first car (about 12 years ago) was a '91 Celica GT-S. I just purchased a '99 GT from an single owner, older lady who took SUPER great care of it and purchased EVERY option from the factory. It's a southern driven, '99 GT with, like I said, EVERY option available (even auto transmission unfortunately). I couldn't turn it down as it only has around 70,000 miles, is in immaculate condition, and was only $5000. I'm really loving this car. I'm just about to graduate college for the 2nd time and have been living on campus without a vehicle the last 2 years. I have a 91 Subaru Legacy with 65,000 miles on it sitting in my driveway, but I blew the tranny in it soon after I moved to school. I didn't need a car so I just let it sit. Now that I needed a car, I decided I'd rather buy something more dependable than take a chance and put a new tranny in a 21 year old car. I really only bought this Celica because it was the best deal I found. It met all my stipulations (had to be, Honda, Toyota, Acura, Lexus, Subaru or Scion, under 80k miles, no rust and under $8,000). So, enter the 99 GT. Pretty much the end of story so far. Definitely one of the best handling cars I've ever owned, right up with my old Integra Type-R. Probably the most comfortable car I've owned, even more than my moms Acura RDX and Grandmothers Lexus RX350. Though it's one of the slowest, besides my old 93 Civic DX coupe. I plan on swaping in a BEAMS redtop with manual transmission, JDM twin piston "Celica" calipers, SS-III front and rear splitters, SS-III grill, GT-Four hood. JDM projector headlights, TRD front strut tower brace, and probably reupholster the front seat as the leather has a few cracks. That's probably it. Hopefully, I can get some good pics of it whenever the sun decides to come out one of these days and post them. It's good to be here! -------------------- 99 Celica GT-S

Thanks! I'd also lover to lower it with the TRD lowering springs but the ride is already stiff enough with the optional upgrades sport suspension the previous owner bought it with. Idk how stiff the regular suspension is, but I feel every bump and RR tracks are REAL fun. It's not horrible, but you can definitely tell it has a sport suspension. Feels like my old 2001 Integra Type-R after I installed 2" Skunk2 lowering springs (RIP).
Small fact you should know about me, though I've been fairly "clean" for the last 5 years (except for one motorcycle wipeout), in my 12 years of driving, I've pretty much totaled or blown up every car or motorcycle I've owned That's about 14 vehicles. '91 Celica GT-S - totaled '92 Corolla - totaled '93 Civic DX (turbo charged, NOS, body kit, etc) - totaled ... twice '86 Prelude Si (winter car) - scrap metal '84 Corvette - owed for one month and sold (junk) '85 Porche 944 S1 - blown engine, sold '99 Civic Si - (full exhaust, type-r seats, skunk2 springs, type-r lip kit, etc) - totaled '01 Integra Type-R (JDM recaro seats, JDM header and exhaust, Skunk2 springs, carbon hood, etc) - totaled '91 Integra GS (full B18B NA engine build Skunk2 stage 2 cams and valves, port/polish everything, full venom fuel system, full MSD ignition system, custom pistons, CF hood, CF hatch, CF fenders, Skunk2 ECU, Civic Si transmission with ACT flywheel and clutch, etc, blah blah blah) totaled, sold off parts '91 Integra LS (drivetrain swapped from previous Integra, but nothing else) - blown engine, sold off parts '94 Accord LX Coupe - sold '91 Legacy - blown tranny, in storage ... soon to be for sale (around 70,000 miles!) '99 Celica GT - here's hopin! '07 Kawasaki 250 - bought new, wrecked, rebuilt, sold '08 Kawasaki 500 - bought new, wrecked '89 Kawasaki ZX-6r (track bike) - sold '08 Kawasaki ZX-6r - bought new, current -------------------- 99 Celica GT-S

Either you have really bad luck, or can't drive. Good luck with the Celica.

Maybe you should keep this car stock to avoid blowing it up or smashing it into someone?

Actually, its a mixture of both bad luck and poor driving. Blown engines were basically bad luck and part of the tuning learning process. I actually used to be a mechanic. I went to school through toyota's T-TEN program. It's two years, and you come out with an Associates degree and, if you applied yourself, a butt-load of certificates. The classes are long, usually 4 hour lectures and 4 hour labs, then you have your regular classes like english, math, etc. But to be honest, I just wasn't happy taking my hobby and making it my profession. Maybe if I could have gotten into a field more specific to my liking, like rebuilding engines. But you have to find a specialty shop for that. Now-a-days, most shops won't rebuild engines, because they lose money. In the time they can rebuild an engine, they can do 8 brake jobs and 15 oil changes and make more money. Plus, unless you own your own shop, you pretty much have a pay cap of around $20 an hour. That wasn't enough for me. So here I am, about to finish my bacholars degree.
Back to the cars, so most of the accidents where actually at intersections. Admittedly, usually from me not paying attention enough. But a couple because of the other driver being stupid. I have a tendency to let my mind wonder. But to be honest, buying my first motorcycle and learning to ride was the best thing I ever did. You really learn to pay attention. Cause no one sees you, so you have to watch them and you. Now, I don't even come close to getting into accidents. I did wreck the first bike slamming on the brakes too hard as a noob rider, and the second bike (500) my friend wrecked doing a wheely, before I even got the title for it from Kawasaki. But it's cool cause I bought the ZX-6r with the insurance money. -------------------- 99 Celica GT-S

Thumbsup for two wheels. Taught me to look every driver in the eye and spend as much time watching my mirrors as watching forward.
With your luck in cars it sounds like you should strap mattresses all over your car, so when someone hits you you just bounce off This post has been edited by Special_Edy: Apr 23, 2012 - 12:07 PM |

I will admit, getting older helps. At 29, I'm not prone to speeding or wreckless driving. I've gotten to the age where I shake my head at people driving the way I used to. I still like pretty cars, and like a car that can accelerate and get out of it's own way when it needs to. But I no longer feel the need to go 10 miles over the speed limit everywhere much-less race people on the highway at 150mph+ (true story). I have a fiance to worry about now.
And I will get pics posted soon, it's still really gray here in Syracuse. We're even supposed to get some SNOW! I'm sure we'll have a warm sunny day next week. Such is the weather here in central NY ... back and forth, back and forth. This post has been edited by Xander_X: Apr 23, 2012 - 2:23 PM -------------------- 99 Celica GT-S

I'm so happy to see more NY'ers on this site. There was a lack of them when I first joined... and a lack of Celica respect up here. Locally, JDCelica has done a 3S-GTE swap and probably could lend some advice when it comes to the time you are prepared to tackle the 3S-GE BEAMS RT. Welcome. Hopefully we can get a NY thing going. RabidTRD: I went to MCC for it. RIT does't do associate programs. I live in Oswego right now, but my fiance and I plan on moving back to Rochester within the next year. I left Rochester in 2007. If you were around then, I was driving around in my black '91 Integra GS. You probably wouldn't have noticed it because all the carbon fiber blended in with the black paint. Other than that, and Corbeau seats/Harnesses, everything was performance, so it wasn't flashy at a glance.

(I also didn't notice the associate part >,<) Very nice. I know quite a few people with Teg's. They're fun cars. I feel like Rochester is a bit more fun than Oswego. Last time I was out there, I got pulled over for speeding by an unmarked SUV in the middle of nowhere... when I didn't know where the hell I was or what the limit was. That was fun haha. -------------------- 1994 Toyota Celica GT-S 5S-FE 190k Miles. Project car 1992 Toyota Celica GT 5S-FE 170k Miles. Daily driver/beater 1999 Toyota Camry LE 5S-FE 216K Miles. RabidTRD: Rochester "a bit" more fun? I LOVED the three years I lived there. Oswego is absolutely horrid. I wouldn't suggest this place to anyone. Plus its smaller in size to ANY of rochesters suburbs (i.e. Henrietta, Greece, Pitsford, etc). I really can't wait to move back.
Integra's ARE fun. I really love my Celica, loved my '91 GT-S too. But I also love Acura's and Subaru's. I pretty much have a hard-on for anything sporty made by Toyota, Honda or Subaru. My built '91 Integra was by far the fastest car I've owned. Fast enough to blow the differential straight out of the tranny. I'm really looking forward to doing an engine swap in the Celi and see what she does. I was thinking of just turboing it, but it looks like a lot more of a pain in the ass than just doing a complete swap. -------------------- 99 Celica GT-S
