I have the 6 speaker stereo system and I want a little more bass. Just to get a full sound out of the audio. I was thinking of replacing either the door speakers or rear speakers with 8" subs but I'm afraid that I'll loose too much mid and high. Has anyone done this, and how does it sound?
And adding a sub and amp in the rear hatch isn't an option for me. I really don't like them taking up space or having to remove it if I need more room. -------------------- 99 Celica GT-S

yup, I did it with polk audio shallow mounts. It does produce some nice bass, but I also have a kicker 12 in the back. If you want good sound quality upgrade your rear speakers and do the sub conversion in the front and upgrade the tweeters. You are going to need a 2 channel amp and the wiring to the doors is kinda annoying. Also make sure you do sound dampening material in your doors so that you don't rattle alot.

I'd love to get the door panels for an 8 speaker system, but finding someone willing to sell them is another issue entirely. If I found someone with one of them, I'd buy the panels, harnesses and amp im rockin a single 10 with stock speaker and tweeters... I actually have a few different 10"s and 12"s and different amps sitting in storage. And my part time job, while I'm finishing up my third degree, is working at an automotive aftermarket shop. The sh#ts around me all day. I'm just not into adding that extra to my cars anymore. I like the stock/OEM look all the way around. My last 3 daily drivers, including my current one (01 Camry XLE V6, 05 Accord EX-L V6, 10 RDX turbo Tech edition) all had (have) factory installed sub/s. I love the way it sounds. It's not too much, not too little, and I don't have a box in the trunk/hatch and wiring running from the engine to the trunk/hatch. Is the factory sub amp in the same location as the main amp? pics.. i cant remember what speakers the 6-speaker system has.. as far as more bass goes, you could always do the 8" subs wherever you wanted them (front or rear) and put a small amp (say a 250 watt kicker) in a concealed location, i.e. under the front passenger seat, or on the back of one of the rear seats (actually in the trunk) where it wouldn't take up much room.

Ok, again, NOTHING is going in the trunk, NOTHING. I'm really not looking for suggestions on WHAT to do, just curious as to who's done the swap and if it sounds good. Doesn't matter, I'm just going to either buy some 8 speaker door panels or buy another set of 6 speaker ones and add the 5 1/2" ... the 8's, at least in pics, just look like 6's that they did the same to. Then find an OEM amp and upgrade all the speakers.

i may have not done this personally to my car (havent had the money or time), but i have helped several ppl do similar to theirs... u r obviously curious about doing this, so why not find out how to do it at the same time.. whats the big deal with a 4"x6" 2"deep amp goin on the back of a seat to power door/rear subs? it takes up literally no space..

Idk, I just don't like the look of the amp sticking out. I've become a really big OEM snob in my old age. If it wasn't offered as an option by the respective company or off brand (TRD) is SOME country, I typically don't want it. I will usually sacrifice performance, looks, SOUND, etc in order to keep everything kosher. Hell, I'd LOVE the 25th anniversary badges and mats, but because mines a 99, not a 96, it seems improper. I think it all roots back to about 10 years ago with the Type R craze with everyone putting Type R, Type S, GT-R, SE-R, etc stickers and badges on their cars regardless of what it's make or what they had done to it. Sh*t, you could go to Pep Boys, Advance Auto, AutoZone and get all kinds of lights, shift knobs, petals, stickers, bolt on muffler ... all stuff that gave you massive HP gains, and people ate it up ... hell I was one of them for a while. I have a civic that was practically SCRAPING the ground with an Invader body kit and 18" wheels, full exhaust, turbo, underglow, TV w/ PSone ... you name it ... if it was in the aftermarket catalog I had it or WANTED it lol. That was 10 years ago. I've gone from "tuner" to pretentious automotive hobbyist. It just built up to the point that I just want as little as possible to do with aftermarket. Now I realize that sometimes you kinda have to. I've heard what the stereos sound like with the JBL systems. My 01 Camry XLE had a lesser/similar version. That sounded great, and I'd bet the Celica version sounds better. That being said, the last year of our vehicles was 99 ... do I want to buy someones used factory speakers from that long ago maybe longer? No, going to HAVE to go aftermarket. But I'm sure I can find something in my shop comparable to the factory subs that a factory amp could handle. If I HAVE to go aftermarket all around, I guess I'll just have to hide the amp under the passenger seat.
Now, back to one of my previous questions, does anyone know where the FACTORY sub amp would be located? -------------------- 99 Celica GT-S

I want to say that the amps were below the A/C control panel, in the dash. At least one of them was, in that general vicinity. Don't hold me to it though.

I know the main one is, I've only had this car 2 weeks and haven't had a chance to tear it all apart yet. I had a couple friends with 6gc back in my tuner days and I remember them having "issues" putting after market systems in because they had to bypass the factory amp and what not and I remember them showing me where it was. i respect that u want to keep as much oem as possible, but those speakers are so crappy by today's standards.. we all have to compromise at some point.. stock amp that has to be bypassed is under the driver's seat.. mine is an ST, so i only have the in stereo amp and it didnt have to be bypassed for anything

Also, in regards to OEM. Know how you feel. When I redo my audio it's going to be a pain. Don't have anything against aftermarket, just cheap Chinese crap. I put 8 inch 300watt subs in my doors an wired them for 1ohm to a 200 watt amp thats under my drivers seat
But i also have 2 12inch subs in the trunk hooked up to the same amp in the trunk Its not alot of bass with just the 8s but its alot better than stock Id suggest upgrading the rears to 6x9s too gives alot better sound after you take away some of the highs out from switching to the door subs -------------------- 95 gt coupe, v6 swap weekend toy

i had the 8" kicker subs on the door, its true you add some bass but you lose the mids for clarity. and you have to amp it. I'd just mod it if i were you to support the 6.5" speakers, and get 2 way or 3 way. thats what i did.

Even if I wanted to keep it to OEM speakers, my only options are 13 - 18 year old used speakers ... no thank you. At least speakers get hidden behind panels. I was talking with my supplier yesterday about the decline of audio equipment and all the brands and he was telling me there is a new brand out designed by the original MB Quart engineers ... I can't think of the name off the top of my head. But I'm sure you can find it if you search. I'll talk to my supplier next time I get a chance and get the name for you. I've just decided to just do an 8 speaker swap/conversion. I'll probably keep my door panels and just install the 5 1/2"s up top, it's a bit against my "OEM" fetish but I think I can made it look damned close to identical. Then add the 8" subs in the doors and, I'm gonna try a factory amp first, if I fail, I fail ... at least I'll know then and get something small and hide it under the passenger seat. I've got like a 12 year old, smaller, Eclipse 2 channel sitting in storage somewhere. I really only want a little bit of bass. Just enough to enrich the sound. I don't ever want people to hear me "bumpin" down the street. It's not a 60's Impala .... it's a Celica. You mention not wanting all the wiring and extra amp....so do you want good audio? Or OEM audio?
If you simply want OEM, get all the OEM components and install it, sure it will sound OK.....for someone that works in audio daily, no it does not sound good. Also, if you car is not previously wired for the OEM amp, and such, you'll have quite the enjoyable time installing all of it. Which is where I would suggest scratching the OEM concept, and install an aftermarket solution. The amount of wiring that goes into place for the OEM amp is nearly insane, and would prove interesting to see someone install one that hasn't been cut. FYI, as you already know, you can install everything cleanly. Snobby OEM tastes or not =P I have 2 12's in my trunk, and they bang hard...it is a Celica, but that doesn't mean I cannot boom like an "impala" - My sh!t also doesn't rattle and you can hear a full spectrum of audio... |

As far as mounting the speakers in the doors, it's very possible to mount them in your doors and make it look OEM. I will admit the stock over the shoulder speakers being 15+years in age have amazinly held up well, and not fallen apart like some of the aftermarket name brands. My fronts have always been busted, in both celicas. I'm sure the OEM system is ok, it just doesn't cut it for me though. |
