richee3: Being that I've never SEEN one personally I can't say 100%, but all the information I've found on the 8 speaker Celcia system uses two 8" JBL subwoofers STOCK in the doors, where the 4 and 6 speaker system has regular 6.5" speakers.

rave2n: I agree. I was impressed, when I picked up my Celica, at the quality of sound coming from the factory speakers. Then I remembered that Toyota likes to use JBL and that the 6gc utilized a seperate amp as apposed to a built in one in the head unit. No, they do not sound as good as if I put, let's say, an older Eclipse component set in. That's why I'm going to replace everything with newer JBL speakers.

I'm going to keep the factory amp and head unit. I have no desire for anything flashy. I have a 10 year old 8 volt Eclipse deck in my 91 Legacy Sport turbo that's seen like 4 different vehicles. I refuse to get rid of it, mostly because I don't feel anyone has made anything better quality since, but I'm a bit biased towards pre-buyout Eclipse products. I suppose if I have to wire in an aftermarket amp to power the door subs, then so be it. I'll just attempt to hide it in the dash or under the passenger seat. Amd I'll run the speaker connectors for the original door speakers up to the newly placed 5 1/2's.

Can't go wrong with JBL! Use those in all studio monitor situations here at the station, and my 2 12's are JBLs. Love me some JBL =)

Using JBL's msrp pricing, replacing factory tweeters, replacing factory rear 6.5's, replacing door 6.5's with 8" shallow subs, and adding 5.25's ... a total of 8 new speaker, plus utilizing one of their compact 2 channel low/high amp ... it'll be around $550. And my cost will be a little less (sadly, my shop isn't a licensed JBL reseller, but we get a bit of a discount.) I think that's a pretty fair price point imho.

It might use 2 8" JBL subwoofers, but that's all tied into one amp behind the heater controls. I believe the amp is different between the 6 speaker and 8 speaker system, but I'm not entirely sure.

Much agreed on fair pricing, and sounds like a solid setup.

The 6 speaker has the amp under the climate controls, the 8 speaker stereo has an additional amp mounted under the driver seat

I mounted my PDX5 under my drivers seat. It fit just fine and you'd never have known i had an amp in the car unless you saw the sub in the hatch. There's plenty of room under either seat for an amplifier if you want it out of the way.
As far as subs in the doors, i know people have done it, but ill be 100% honest in saying that my type-x 6.5" speakers rattled the hell out of my doors. They sounded fine until i hit ~150 watts RMS. After i went over that mark, the rattles started to come out regardless of how much effort i put into sound deadening. Because of this, i wouldn't ever go as far as throwing an actual sub in the door panels.
Ive never heard a car system sound as good as mine did with the 6.5" drivers up front. Id get some decent components and buy these off of ebay:

He will be fine with the factory 8, it shouldnt rattle anything.
I found a set of 8 speaker door panels and amp in the salvage yard and my goal is the get rid of my retarded HD radio and 12s . Gonna go back to stock, and put in that 8 speaker premium stereo.

Should keep that HD radio, or atleast a interface for it.

It is a growing market, that is taking alot of investments by radio companies.

I gotta agree with Xander, the OEM looks the best. Aftermarket stereos dont match the dash or the other instruments.

I've admittedly just become very cynical in my "old age" about parts and the way things look. I've been "tuning" imports for 15 years now, before The Fast and The Furious was a twinkle in some writers eye. Yeah, I went through the PepBoys phase, I went through the "looks and sound" phase, then started pursuing performance, with little attention to looks (besides being clean obviously). Now, I just want everything to be perfect and the way it was made to be.

My uncle has a warehouse with a first year Viper, a 2004 Viper, 65 GTO convertible with a hurst package, 72 Olds Hurst (complete frame off), 87 Grand National, 87 Grand National GNX edition with the plastic on the seats and window sticker on the window still, some crazy rare 50's Chevy pickup, some rare edition of and RX-8 they only made 120 of ... and more ... I've been hanging out with him a lot the last few years and he's the same way. Wouldn't dream of putting something aftermarket in any of them unless it was the only option (though neither of us are opposed to replica parts if a good OEM one is not to be found). So I think he just rubbed off on me. You start to learn to appreciate the car for what the company saw it as and not want to alter it more than the company allowed for ... that to me includes parts offered in that vehicles generation (in any country), and that company's aftermarket brands and affiliates; in Toyota's case, TRD, TOM's, etc

Well lets put it this way, the manufacturer without a doubt had to keep prices down, make a profit on the car and keep it reasonable so that it appeals to a wide range of people. So everything OEM on the car isnt as great as it could of been. BUT, the factory did spend millions of dollars designing the vehicle and making sure everything included was reliable, well integrated with the rest of the vehicle and had balanced performance.

You just cant compete with the R&D and mass production that is OEM

2 twelves will fit nicely in the cargo area, or get the door panels for the 8 speaker stereo system. It has 8 inch subs in the doors.

FALSE.... I PROMISE i have no such thing in the doors. They are the same 6.5's like everyone else.

THERE ARE NOT stock factory 8 in subs in the doors in the premium audio set up. My car has factory 8 spkr premium audio... both front speakers blown at one point, replaced them with the EXACT same speakers from my coupe 6spkr parts car.

One amp in the dash behind the thermostat, the other under the drivers seat.

The guy who owned the car before me, had a 600W amp power two tens and the rest of the car.
When I bought it, both from 6.5's were blown, and the passenger side 4" was blown.......

Factory would sound good if you can get the 4" speakers in the door to be the mids... and the rears which are regular old 5 to 6" speakers, can't remember atm - need upgraded for sure, but mounting has always been a problem without custom fiberglass work under the door panels....

Edit:
There may have been so much modifying done to the car maybe they were junk yard replacements.... but they looked exactly like the other ones I pulled... basic 6.5" woofers.... not a subwoofer...

86160-2B150- 15w, OD=208
86150-2B160- 25w, OD=208

According to the part numbers, the difference is that the 6 speaker system uses 15 watt speakers and the 8 speaker system is 25 watt.

My car has the 8 speaker setup:

Reduced: 60% of original size [ 1600 x 1200 ] - Click to view full image

It consists of 4 speakers, 2 subwoofers and 2 tweets total. The 8" JBL subs are located at the bottom front of each door, then there is a 5" mid speaker above that, and then the tweeter in the triangle piece above that. The rears are 6.5". There are 2 amps, one behind the shifter under the dash, and one under the driver side seat.

So I'm getting mixed results here.

I think I tossed both of my blown speakers in the trash. If they were 8's and not 6.5's, they weren't subs i don't think....

This is going to bug me now. I seem to remember mine looking slightly larger, but the time frame between when I removed them and when I finally got working speakers put back in was almost a year. I have no idea what I did with the originals. kindasad.gif mad.gif mad.gif

http://www.6gc.net/forums/index.php?showto...l=premium+audio

8 in mid maybe?
not an 8 in subwoofer... but who knows... Looks like I need to find me some stock 8in speakers lol
