Hello all. I have a few issues with my 6th gen 1996 Aniv Ed. ST 1.8 hatchback. My AC blows warm air, and I need freon. What type of freon does this type of celica take? I can get any type of freon, and I know I "should" do the conversion kit, but I am a bit strapped for cash and want to do whatever is cheaper.

The second issue I have is with my brakes. I replaced my brake pads and rotors a few months ago, and they have been squeaking ever since. I Put break lube between the shims and pads, and used caliper lube on the caliper sliders. It worked for a good 2 minutes before it started squeaking again. Any more possible issues this could be from? I was told I may have just gotten low quality brake pads, but I wasn't aware they could sell brake pads that are instantly defective and squeak from day 1.

Thanks--I have a few other issues with the car, such as valve ping, sunroof, fuse short, etc., but the AC comes first! It's been 70-80 all week in NY.

I beliieve in 1994 that 134-a became manditory even though its an inferior refrigerant.

You can see what you have by examining the high and low pressure ports, they are completly different if you have a R12 (freon) system compared to a modern R134a system.

I suggest that you google for specs/pics, but the low pressure port on R134a systems have a 13mm connection with a quick coupler.

Both my GT '94 and GT-Four '96 have R134a systems, so I guess that yours is too.

id be more concerned with the pinging in your engine. what good is AC when your engine is dead

Is the R-134a stock in the 96'? I never did the conversion.

As for the valve ping, I was told to fill with 93 a few times to fix the rattle. Two mechanics told me this so I assume they are on to something, but to me it seems too easy of a solution.

Yes I believe that federal law requires 134a or better in all 1994 and newer vehicles. As was stated above 134a systems have quick couplings on them similar to air compressor fittings while r12 has threaded fittings. It isnt possible for you to connect the wrong type of refrigerant or to connect it to the wrong side(high and low side are different fittings).

My 94 ST-204 is 134a



as for the brakes-

Yes cheap pads will squeal even when new. A quality set of pads made with better friction material is far less likely to squeal. The other thing is did you turn your rotors? They are usually glazed and may have grooves in them by the time a set of brake pads wear out.

Thanks for the input. I did find out my AC is 134a. $44 later and my A/C is now working. Yet my gf wont let me turn it on because it is "too cold" now.

As for the brakes, I put new pads and new rotors in maybe five or six months ago. I will post a link to the brake pads I got when I get home.

The next thing I am attempting to fix is the sunroof. When I push the buttons I still hear noise. Does that mean the motor is working and it is just off the track somehow? If so, How do I get to it without destroying the roof lining. I started to attempt to take it off, but it feels like it is just felt taped onto a piece of weak cardboard. I don't want to crease the hell out of it when taking it off and then find out after I put it back it looks terrible.

taking the roof lining off is a pain. Let me tell you, seat belts, plastic pieces that go behind the seat belts, up from the dash to the roof, up from the back of the car etc etc all have to come out. You better be ready to work on her.

I was afraid of that.... If you crease the lining on the cardboard side, does it show on the felt side? I started taking it off last week and I got close to making a crease on it, but stopped right there becasue I didn't know if that would show or not.

As for the brake pads, I called the company I got them from and the girl is working on getting me a new pair.

not sure I'd chance it.
