So I am contemplating on doing a 3S-GTE swap as there is a local importer that has a couple of them (2nd, 3rd, 4th)
From all of the experienced members here, what would be the best choice for a 3sgte swap? Local importer quoted $2,100 for a 3rd gen 3S-GTE with everything including harness and ECU. -------------------- 1993 Celica GT Coupe - sold

As I understand it, 3rd gen is generally the best choice for our cars since its the generation that came in our cars. There is the least wiring involved, and something about parts- though I can't remember if it's the availability of maintenance parts or if its the abundance of performance parts.

So the third gen seems to be the best option. It is the one on 93+ SW20 and ST205 Celicas, right? -------------------- 1993 Celica GT Coupe - sold

3rd gen from an st205 is what you want, if you want to have a pain free swap. You also have to remember that there is more money involved than just the cost of the engine. You want to have around 3-4k in hand before you start buying an engine. Things like exhaust work, misc gaskets, fluids, clutch, broken parts, tools you never knew you needed...quickly add up.
Stay away from the mr2 engines. While they are technically the same, you are asking for a headache as the wiring harness is totally different along with a bunch of misc brackets and things. Read the stickies and do some searching. This info has been covered a lot of times before on this forum. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

I just got myself a 3rd gen last week. Its an easy swap from what I can tell. My headache is just from stupid unexcuseable stuff. Like needing a whole new wiring harness with the intercooler water pump relay, intercooler water pump, intercooler radiator, and an ECU. Not alot of stuff but with my lack of luck it just happens to be to more expensive.

I like the look of the top mount, for some reason to me without it, it just looks like something is missing, like it wasnt desgined for FMIC unlike other engines. Yeah granted FMIC helps produce more power, but living in the city, factory HP is really all I need. The engine and shipping totaled out to $1832 -------------------- From Japan to Texas my st202 follows me.

All combined work including a FMIC, 3" exhaust, new muffler, yadda yadda yadda, total cost on this build for me will end up a bit over 4K or so. But that includes an extra tranny swap after running into issues with tranny that came with and some other custom work I'm having done. So yeah, at LEAST 3K. And maybe some extra for unforeseen circumstances. |

I paid 2.8k for mine...came with e154f...so I may have been ripped...
No idea on mileage Don't forget MAP sensor Lil-joe =P Did a little price check yesterday on routine maint before swap, looking around 500 for those items. Oil, water pump, timing belt, and tensioner. Still have to work out exhaust, clutch, and some relays I'll be doing myself. So I'll probally be spending around 6k by the time its in the car and running. I am currently in my swap process and highly recommend a front clip and trust me it might cost more up front but cheaper in the long run as the motor wvu and harness is not even close to everything u need. If u have any questions pm me

$200 for a map sensor? O_o The 3rd gen OEM map sensors are expensive due to being pretty rare and hard to come by. -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

If u have any questions pm me $200 for a map sensor? O_o Yea for a 3sgte one new from Toyota it is $825 I got mine used off eBay from Hong Kong for 200$ and there was only one on there the fuel resistor pack is another hard to come by item. My set came with the fuel resistor. Sourced a MAP sensor on here from a member. Much appreciated! So all I am missing, is the IC heat exchanger, IC water pump, and IC relay/Fuel relays....all pretty easy to source outside of OEM. My harness is clean & uncut...so I'll will most likely be doing the wiring myself, but you could add that cost in there. The majority of the cost from my swap is the preperation of the engine itself such as oil & water pump, idlers, pulleys, seals, tools etc. The only positive I see out of getting the whole front clip, is the posibility of getting some rare item you can sell off to pay for all that. I'm also going to be doing a swap soon and have been looking around at prices. I was thinking that an entire front clip would be the smartest option (not talking cheapest, but having all the parts). If I buy a front clip, and hypothetically every single part in it works what else do I need? Just to have the wiring harness redone?
