Hello all, I recently got an ST205 clip for a swap this winter and obviously need a new tranny. My question: As someone who isn't going to be on a track, is LSD worth it? I don't plan on racing but will I still feel the power or is it worth the time it takes to try to hunt one of these E153 LSD tranny's down?

Thanks.

LSD is totally worth it.

E153, kinda depends on your power goals. Under 300, the S54 is great. Over 300, you'll definitely want the E153.

Honestly, If you have a manual GT, save yourself some money and just use your factory trans. It works just fine with the 3s and I and a few other members have been using them for years in our swaps.

Converting to the LSD trans is a nice idea, but also an extra 1,000 expense added to your swap and more work.

i went to toyota the other day after work and just to see if they could get a part number and price quote on the LSD out of the MR-S.
We located the LSD itself but it could only be ordered in combination with a few other parts its incased in. (I forget what)
But the price was only $650 and thats for the LSD and those additional parts

I plan on going back with some more concrete knowledge of what I need and want so they can better locate what I am looking for.

Well I don't plan on installing an LSD in a tranny, because that is very costly/time consuming. I was just asking, given my situation, if I should go E153 w/ LSD, E153 from Camry (non LSD) or now it appears I should consider the stock transmission from the GT.

Unless you regularly race the car, or like to launch hard a lot, the s54 is just fine,
In fact, in most cases while I'm driving, I prefer the shorter gearing of it over the e153.
However,
Like I said, if you like to launch the car hard, or race a lot, the e153 is the better choice, the axles hold up better, and with the LSD tracks much straighter under power.
:::knocks on wood::
I've been running my stock tranny with my 3rd gen with no issues, and it held up thruout the old 5sfte days, when I beat on the car a lot more, and had more tq than I do now, its taken a beating at the track, held up to multiple hard launches on drag radials,(i ran a 13.6 @ 108mph with the stock tranny back in the 5sfte days) and still works perfectly.
For every story like mime, you can also read one like camerons, (ted95) where one launch on the street, shears the axle at the hub where it goes into the tranny, (although I do believe that was an issue that was caused by the axle not being seated into the tranny properly.)
So, its all up to you, and your budget at the end of the day.

I think you are correct about that, Manny. In order for a steal axle to experience enough torsion force to produce that type of deformation one side of the axle would have to remain stationary while the other (the transmission side) would have to produce a large amount of torque. Under normal conditions this would never be possible because the torque force produced by the transmission would make the tire loose traction before anything else happened. Therefore the steel would never experience enough torsion force to produce that kind of deformation.

its more then likely the reason for why it snapped. the shop down the road replaced a seal for me days be for on the same axle that snapped. one hard launch on the street for fun and it bucked once and snapped. guy swears it was in fine, but once swapped out the tranny and put in the new axle myself (seated correctly for sure) i havent had a problem since.. nor do i really launch my ride as much.. at all lol

only thing with the s54 tranny or non lsd tranny for that matter, you will have more torque steer. however with front poly sway bar bushings, st185 front endlinks and a 3point strut bar, the torque steer cuts down dramaticallyyy.. and is half more then half the price as an lsd trans when all said and done.

cool thanks for all the feedback guys. ill definately look into what you said cameron. so i guess lsd isn't really in the picture unless i can score one cheap. on the same line then, would a s54 or non lsd e153 or even taking the awd portion out of the 154f be the way to go or are they all relatively equivalent.

Don't bother with the E154F. It's too much work and I've read that it doesn't work, though I haven't thoroughly researched the topic and have no firsthand experience.

As for the LSD, I was lucky enough to get factory LSD with my BEAMS swap. Now that I have it, I find the $500 MR-S LSD's that fit the S54 trans to be completely worth it. I really don't want another Celica without it. I can't speak for torque steer, but I know the car pulls itself through a corner much better now than it used to. Not just "a little bit better," but quite a bit better.

I can't speak for the E153 with LSD either, just that those that choose to go high HP on their 3S swaps seem to prefer the longer gearing.

I agree, you'll be fine with the s54, and the shorter gearing is good depending on what you plan on doing with the car.

now now now delusionz.... while 13.1 may be a stretch, 13.5-9 can be done with a stock 3s setup i did 14.2 my first time on the track with crappy 205 40s on my car. I came back years later and did 14.7 with half the power (8lbs instead of 15)

even if he trapped at 110mph, he'd still need a 2.5sec (at the very least) 60ft time to get low 13's , and lets just say that aint happening with only 2x 205 wide (street?) tyres doing all the work...
