3rd gen is the way too go. not much on the 4th gen from what i understand. if you just swap in the 3rd gen your looking at the price for the clip, and any upgrades you plan on doing while you have it out(clutch, water pump and timing belt which should always be done anyways). A complete rebuild is really personal preference. If it was me id rebuild it so i know everything internal is sound and in good shape. assuming you doing the wiring yourself, you should be spending more then 5-6k if you just swap it in with a new clutch, wp, and tb. You can just use your gt trans and axles.

If so, scrap the 4th gen, and get just the trannie. Get the clip. |

SEEMS like you need to do a whole lotta reading on this one... see other members awd conversions, and realize its a heck of a custom job,
see other members drop their car at garages to spend months with little or no job done, and it something is done is pure garbage. its not an easy task, no im not scaring you, you are asking questions that could easily be answered by research. if you want awd, be prepared to fork 10,000 for the man hours on that one, i dont think there are any shops with the experience on that one either, there is only a few awd converions by a few members. there is not a how to book, some people have done custom, sliced and diced, then past 2 cars together, and weld the undercariage of the gt4 to a celica. read their threads, and then decide, -------------------- Learned a lot in 10 years... If you PM me and I dont respond, dont fret or cry. Im alive, better post your questions in the thread below, maybe I log back in 2grfe Swapped... Why I chose the 2GR, before you ask read here... In order to do the awd swap you have to have a burning addiction for it or your rich to pay someone to do it for you. honestly fwd is fine if you dont care about not using 1st or 2nd gear. 350hp to the front wheels is enough to satisfy anyone honestly. |

But anywho if not, why waste your time buying an MR2 clip and then the gt4 front end parts? Not only do you have to deal with reconfigging the engine and harness, but with the gt4 front clip, you get everything you seem to want (hood, bumper, etc..) -------------------- (\__/)

i was lookin at a gt4 front clip but i was told the conversion would cost me more than wat it is actually worth . so i was still plannin on swap motors to the 3sgte but was wondering about the transmission is all . the gt4 front clip is 4000 but the mr2 full swap is 1700 so i was just wondering is all still a lil ways away from making my decision

Mr2 is going to have a few things you need, not all, so expect to spend atleast another 2 grand in those parts equaling out to the 4k you could have spent with the st205 clip, and sold off the extra parts for money. Thats the short story... This post has been edited by rave2n: Aug 3, 2012 - 12:56 PM |

If you have the know how to convert it to AWD, then do it.
If you're planning to simply take it to a shop to do it, forget it. Its not going to happen. It will take forever, or it won't be done properly as no shops really have experience on this. As stated already, read the multiple AWD swaps on here before you even start thinking about it. Because its a crap load of work, and you better do as much research you can, and be prepared to get stuck, and not have much information to help you, because not many have converted to awd. I agree with everyone in this thread, buy a st205 front clip, drop in the 3s, swap the front end, and sell off any remaining parts to decrease the cost. I've never driven a car with 500hp or even 350hp, but i think 350 would be sufficient for a daily driver. Spend the extra money you have on suspension, and focus on being able to put the power to the ground, rather than worrying about swapping to AWD. It will be a better bang for your buck then the headaches of trying to swap to AWD on your own. -------------------- -Protection mode, For when your amp tries to blow its load. 1995 Toyota Celica GTS - Daily Driver 1999 Chevy Cavalier - Winter Beater 1994 Honda Civic CX Hatchback - Dead My Celica! |
