Yes I searched and found the write up on it, but it barely made mention of the banjo bolt which is causing me nothing but grief. It won't break free. The top of the filter actually caved in before the bolt has given any. Have sprayed it with WD-40, still nothing. Have removed the air box out of the way so I have plenty of access. Using a 6 sided 17mm socket on a 1/2" drive ratchet, it's not slipping. Keeps flexing the filter. It is the ORIGINAL filter, so it's been in place for the last 17 years. Is this just a case of seized stubborn bolts, or is there something I'm overlooking? Don't like to be a bother, but I don't want to go any further and end up damaging the banjo bolt and line if there's something I'm overlooking. Changed the fuel pump strainer earlier, the fitting on the send line was a real pain. Finally got it to break free though. Here I thought the fuel filter was going to be the easy part... Thanks for any help that can be provided.

Nah, thats normal...soak it in PB blaster..it'll eventually come out. Your biggest issue, WD-40...When I did my fuel filter, is when I discovered the amaziness of PB blaster
There is a place to put a wrench right under the banjo bolt to stop it from crushing or spinning..but if you already crushed it...yea... This post has been edited by rave2n: Aug 2, 2012 - 7:18 PM |

Yeah it's a right c*nt , for me its the bottom section that wont budge.
atleast if you ruin the top section you can replace the whole filter unit with something easier like 2 barbed hose ends like most cars use what fitting is it underneath? 1/4 BSPT??? -------------------- Mike W

Alright, will get some PB Blaster then. Wasn't expecting the filter to give before the bolt. Replacement Bosch filter I have is sturdy. I figured the Denso/Toyota filter would be sturdy as well.
Already have the replacement filter though, and don't feel like having to modify things. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

our fuel filters have the same problem hondas do. that bolt always gets corroded and freezes up. i run into alot of these. simple way to do it. take out your trusty impact gun and pull the trigger real quick. hasnt ever not worked for me. i would suggest getting the bottom bolt loose first, just the way ive always done them.

Sadly I have no power tools. Always have been able to break everything free with just my own strength. Part of the problem is the damn thing keeps moving, if it'd stay still would probably have gotten it by now.

Why couldn't Toyota be cheap like Nissan and just use rubbers hoses and clamps for the filter?

Good news I found a breaker bar. Going to get some CRC Freeze Off, stuff worked great for when I had to remove bolts from a 67 Cadillac that'd never been touched.

easiest way i found was to remove the bracket from the filter than use two wrenches, one to "turn"the filter and the other to turn the bolt. I say "turn" the filter cause your not really turning it (you dont want to break the fuel line) But youre holding it in place and slightly applying force in the opposite direction when you are trying to loosen the other bolt

Nissan filters suck. Until i went out and bought some pliers that push the line off. Makes them a breeze

soak it, if you need to. use two flare nut wrenches, take the filter off the bracket. then position your two wrenches like scissors where you just squeeze them together. its doable just dont round the lines,

Alright, after soaking if I still can't get it will try the two wrenches approach.

If there's one thing I do before cranking on bolts, it's making sure I'm turning the right way. One broken off bolt when I was younger was enough to teach me that lesson.
Why couldn't Toyota be cheap like Nissan and just use rubbers hoses and clamps for the filter? they did in newer cars. the filter is in the tank and all the hoses are teflon and have barb type fittings Reason I had said such, recently changed the filter in my brother's 95 Maxima. Was just held in by clamps, took like 5 minutes if that. This has just been a total nightmare. -------------------- 2001 Miata LS 5-speed

Finally got it on. The bracket isn't locked around it from being bent to Hell and back. but I don't care. Ran it for awhile and no leaks, so good enough.

its a pain to put back on, if you are trying to put the hard lines back on with the filter mounted already to the bracket. you have to put it on first without the bracket and the last thing you do is mount it to the wall. reason, just like you said is because the hard lines tend to get bent in a certain way.
