What you see is the copper wire that makes up the Hall Effect pickup. There is normally a bit of plastic that protects the coil of wire which left us on the track. With that gone, a bit of wire must have snuck out and quickly was collected by the distributor. The coil was collateral damage as you can see it popped.

Your going to want to replace the whole distributor. Alot of people will say to only get a new one but I would get a remanufactured distributor with a Lifetime Warranty from your local autoparts store. Its gonna run you $200-$300 for a generic distributor that inludes everything except the cap and rotor.

That was the original dizzy.. we ended up driving 2.5 hours round trip to find a replacement distributor at like $200 from a random Autozone so we could get the car back on the track and finish the day. The replacement was actually an OE dizzy "reman'd" but I decided to swap the coil with a brand new one as a tired coil will start to breakdown after heat soaking...

Sorry to bring back an old thread, but the distributor on my daughter's GT looks just like that mess. The funny thing is, it died once, but I was able to start it again and drive it with just an intermittent miss. I can't believe it still ran after seeing that wire spaghetti. Is this common with these distributors?

common? not really, but it does happen.
you can get a reman off ebay for like 125$ shipped for the federal version, with the coil included, as well as a new dizzy cap.
for some reason the cali version is more expensive, and it dont even have the internal coil.

right i noticed you were just gone from posting, well...good to see one of your posts from time to time, are you still down for your celica?

Sorry OP, but if it were an alternator, i'd really tell you to buy an OEM REMAN one because the price is good, but for distributor, i think its too expensive compared to an aftermarket reman.

Hey gatar11,

Your post reminded me of an earlier problem I had in the same area. Check this out as it might be helpful. You might be able to just rebuild your distributor with some new sensors and a coil instead of buying a completely new assembly.

Hope that helps.

I think the OP fixed his distributor long ago. I brought the thread back from the dead because I had the same issue. I'm broke so I went with a junkyard distributor with a new coil.
