Today I am bout to flip the frig out trying to get this driver side axle off.
I've taken them off 4 times before, only once was it this difficult. Tried for 3 hours this morning, and another 2 1/2 yesterday. I need my car to get to work tomorrow...........The hulk has nothing on how livid I am right now. ------------- Just found this...guess I'll try to go find a slide hammer with the puller since I don't have means to weld vice grips to it. Funny enough, he is working on a 6gc =P http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GC8WS3KSD8 This post has been edited by rave2n: Oct 7, 2012 - 12:09 PM |

Today I found someone from a local forum who was willing to let me use his garage for free! So I spent the whole day yesterday shopping for tools (jack, creeper, jack stands, tool box, ratchet set, pliers and a bunch of other stuff) since I didn't have any at all! So I met with the guy and he was totally cool about the whole thing. He gave me a key to the garage and said 'just lock up when you're done and toss the key in my truck'. He also offered his air compressor, but sadly, buying air tools was not within my budget. Unfortunately for me, my ****ty ratchet broke (never buy cheap ratchets!) when I attempted to remove the 30mm axle nut to get the driveshaft off the knuckle. So I told him I'd buy another ratchet sometime this week and he said that I'm welcome to use his garage anytime! I'll have another go at it next weekend. I offered him a case of beer for his generosity but the man refused so out of appreciation I just tidied the place up a bit before I left. It was the least I could do.

Unfortunately for me, my ****ty ratchet broke (never buy cheap ratchets!) when I attempted to remove the 30mm axle nut to get the driveshaft off the knuckle. More often then not, using a ratchet will break when trying to remove an axle nut. Especially the cheap ones. I've broke 3 1/2 inch ones doing so, along with 2 small & 1 large breaker bars trying to get the axle nut off. Not sure of the tools places in your area, but I picked up an air 275 ft/lbs at 90psi with req of 4.8 cfm impact 1/2 inch gun for 35 bucks. Zipped that bolt right off. The cost of all those tools I broke was more expensive then just buying the air impact =P This post has been edited by rave2n: Oct 8, 2012 - 6:51 AM |

I had a feeling it would break (as I have broken some before) but seeing that the previous owner had already replaced the same axle once before and that the car hasn't seen canadian winters yet, I was hoping the axle nut would come off without hassle. Anyway I'm going to pick up a breaker bar, a replacement ratchet, and a ball joint separator tool before the weekend and try again. Man I'm really missing my dad's garage right now... oh and my family too.. lol.

Re-pulled the short axle, put a new seal on it.
No more leaks, everything all greased. I'll slap the wheels on, and drive it tom. To beat to do it now, and its raining =P |

Yesterday I changed out front wheel studs and put 10mm wheel spacers on the front. It's amazing how such a small thing makes the car look better.

I just learned today (its actually quite sad cause I've had the car almost 2 years) that mines a Cali spec. Took off the manifold cover to make room for a hoist and low and behold there was a cadi. Which makes no sense cause the car has spent its whole life in NC... Also the guy I bought the car from (hes the second owner; also my bestfriend so I know, to at least him, its the truth) said apparently the 16" BBS rims (profile pics to see) were a dealer option? He said it was an older couple that bought the car back in '96 from the dealership and that the rims had been on there since day one.
Also I made progress today Also noticed this But its okay cause I have a new one |
