I was just curious what engine oil does everyone on here use? I use a Castrol synthetic blend 10w30 in both of my Celica GTs and I live in east Texas.

Whatever synthetic blend is on sale. But Always Always use a oem toyota oil filter or a K&N, you must have the antidrainback valve on the 5SFE.
I put royal purple synthetic in my 94 GT with 115k and it blew out 3 major gaskets within a week. Of course the previous owner just reused the old oil and filter everytime they changed it. ![]() 5w-30 in the winter and 10w-40 in the summer This post has been edited by Special_Edy: Oct 22, 2012 - 1:03 PM |

I've used both 10W-30 and 5W-30. I prefer Castrol GTX. Also, I think I'm right in saying that I should be using 10W since I'm in a hot, humid climate...the oil should thin due to high heat environment (but please correct me if I'm not).

I have 119k on my 5sfe and use Mobile 1 synthetic with the top of the line filter sold at walmart. It guarantees a 15-20k mileage together. Even after 15k (which is when I change it) the oil is still fairly clean and doesn't get goopy.

Rotella T6 5w-40. Best oil second only to AMSoil. Don't use it if you have a catalytic converter though.

Gah...after 4k (I typically change every 3k) its a wee nasty, not goopy and black but not looking like fresh oil either. Although I do have 220k on a motor that's never had its internals touched (knock on wood) and I use convential oil (not big on synthetic even though you don't have to change it as often). Isnt 7500 the recommended interval? I change mine every 3000, but then I dont care about this engine. My bike and pickup get their oil changed every 1000 miles. The inside of those engines are clean enough to eat off of, which leads me to believe that the longer you go between oil changes the more brown crap that gets caked onto every surface inside the motor. |

Lol this is on the 1964 chevy pickup that gets 5mpg and the 1982 SECA 750. They dont see too many miles but they get run hard when they are driven. I put cheap penzoil or inhouse brand oil into them but at a 1000 mile interval, it doesnt have a chance to break down and sludge up. The engine stays spotless inside.

Synthetic oil doesn't break down as fast, hence it lasts longer. how clean your oil is depends on your filter. The filter I use (Fram Ultra) removes 98% of dirt and grime. I can still see through my oil after 15K. Also, 15k is the low side. I know lots of people that go 20k. I also have a Nissan Armada that I run the same and have 280k on the engine of which I have never touched. Neither my celica or my armada use or leak any oil. Synthetic is totally worth the investment. You just have to watch it with cars with older seals. Sometimes when you haven't used it before it will leak through older seals. Regardless you should pull your dip stick every 2-3k and check your levels and cleanliness. You should also run cleaners every 25-50k if you want your engine to really last.
