I was wondering if anyone knew the OEM mode of operation for the JDM low beam lamps "City Lamps"? I think thats what they call them, lol.
The small bulbs in the main low beam housing with the actual low beams in JDM headlights without the projector bulbs. I need to wire up my JDM lamps, but would like to know what the OEM way they operate. Are they like daytime running lamps? on with the marker lights? ? Thanks! |

park lights, are what your thinking of
We also dont have our side or front markers/indicators light up with the lights on unless your indicating or have the hazard button on. From what I understand you guys do? -------------------- |

i believe they go on with the parking lights. That makes sense, so they are not DTRL. (Day Time Running Lights). (But CAN BE if I want!) park lights, are what your thinking of We also dont have our side or front markers/indicators light up with the lights on unless your indicating or have the hazard button on. From what I understand you guys do? From what I remember, the side marker lights and front lamps light with the parking lights. It's interesting how different countries have differnt laws about car illumination. Its going to be tough to do this work in the cold rain.... |

I always assumed that-
J & E spec celicas have the side marker by the door, this makes the usdm tail light side marker less important (so jdms dont have them) , because the jdm/euro side marker(on the fender) is more visible from the rear than the usdm side marker. The side marker being closer to the center of the vehicle also makes it less visible from the front of the car, this necessitates the need for the parking lamps in the headlights. I also believe they were added for asthetic reasons, because who wants a sad lonely little projector(halogen light the housing more evenly). Also an interesting thing I noticed on my usdm- If our front turn indicator bulb is out, the second filiment in the bulb(parking lamp) will take over operation of the turn indication as well continuing to function as a parking lamp. Excellent example of Toyota Redundancy. Oh and State/federal law here is that the vehicle needs amber(maybe red?) side markers on the corners of the vehicle so that its length and width are easier to judge. So in the rest of the world yall have "side markers" where as we in the USA have what is literally a "corner marker" even though we call it a side marker, in addition to tail lights and headlights. |

It's called Accent Lights. It's similar to what a lot of Honda fans call City Lights.

If I had mine plugged in I'd be able to let you know. Stock lights, stock wiring, jdm style. Also, the fender side lights I can only get to come on with blinkers. They don't come on with the head lamps unless there is some power feed that must first go through the head lights I don't yet have installed (similar to blinkers not working unless the hazard light switch is installed.)

So what you are saying is that by putting JDM tail lights and fenders on, we are breaking the law? lol
Because I shaved my "side markers" off altogether and I have JDM tails hahaha |

Are you certain they have to be DOT approved? Isnt that only for manufacturers, not consumers?
So long as they meet specification they should be legal, and what kind of expert is anyone else to declare them unlawful. |

I believe what Mike what getting at is that laws in certain areas require sidemarkers to be on all the time with the parking lights, not just flashing with the turn signals.

And the side markers may come on with the headlights when I plug them , there may be some dependant circuit there. Too early to tell yet, but as far as I know it'll take someone who has an imported rhd vehicle to tellv truly. Liljoe, one of the guys in Canada, Europe, or otherwise. Or I could go plug my headlights in and let you know. Lol

Equipment used on public roads has to be approved for use on public roads -- in the U.S., this means they have to be DOT certified.
It's why E-code headlights, although superior in performance and safety to American headlight patterns, were illegal to install in the U.S. while Canadian law allowed both beam patterns. Red lights on civilian vehicles are only allowed at the rear; white lights are only allowed at the front (technically the end pointing in the direction of travel, which is how you get backup lights), and amber are allowed all around. This holds true in both the U.S. and Canada. Parking lights may go on with the engine -- e.g. Canadian Celicas -- or only with the headlights -- American Celicas. I'm not sure about the Japanese design. However, as I understand it those side amber lights are required to flash to indicate turns in all markets outside North America (it's optional here). |

Interesting. I modified my 7th gen wiring so that my side amber marker come on like normal, but also blink with the turn signal in the headlights. (Actually they alternate blinking) I was looking at doing something similar in my 6gen. |

i connected them to the parking/signal lights but I chose the wires that don't signal/blink.
