I have read many things about the MAF sensor and possible problems it can cause by not being there. "The MAF sensor is there to measure the volume of air drawn into the engine. It is used to determine the load on the engine. If the engine load isn't measured correctly, the car doesn't know how much fuel to inject, when to fire the cylinder or when to shift the transmission". (http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/h34.pdf)
Honestly, it sounds rather necessary and I wouldn't risk not having it installed IMO. -------------------- |

truth. well, I gotta find a tool to cut the hole. what did you use? Also, did you have to put your celi on a jack and take the wheel off to take out the wheel well panel?

I didn't have a hole saw so i had to improvise. First I wrapped the pipe in electrical tape where I was drilling, just incase the drill bit decided to wander (helps prevement scratching). Then I used a small drill bit to start the hole (like 1/8" or less) and then moved up to a 3/8" bit, which was the largest I could track down in my house. After that, I had to use a reamer type of drill bit to get the hole up to 5/8" and then just kept working the hole in a circle until it was close to 3/4". Then, I slipped the grommet that came on the stock air box in the hole, stuck the MAF sensor in, and done.
I jacked up the car just to give me some more room to play and had it blocked and propped up on triangle stands (rather be safe than sorry). I left the wheel on, I found I had plenty of room to work in there. I unbolted about half of the wheel well plastic and just pulled it down so I could work in there. It's maybe 6 screws and a bit of pulling to get it off the car. I didn't remove the whole piece, I just left it resting on the wheel. -------------------- |

My mom says she has a dremel. Would that be useful in this kind of situation? The only tools I'm used to using are screwdrivers, ratches, hammers, etc. Aka noob-tools.

You shouldn't need a hammer to do this so you can scratch that
Screwdriver and ratchet are necessary. The dremel tool probably will work for you. I'm not sure if it will work for drilling the hole, but once you have a hole, if you have a grinding/sanding attachment for it, you should be able to fix up the hole/make it bigger and any rough edges you make from cutting the pipe easily. Make sure you have a 10mm metric socket. and a Phillips-head screwdriver (+). You can probably cut the pipe with the dremel as well, but i used a hacksaw. QUOTE(DSToyo @ May 9, 2007 - 7:36 PM) as for the bypass valve...you probably wont need it, but its better to be safe than sorry, for example when you hydrolock and you have all those problems, your gonna wish youd spent the money for one. x10 - take it from someone who's been there before. 4AM shooting water out my sparkplug holes and changing my oil on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. Stupid tow truck driver That plus the almost no gain is why I'm sticking with SRI. This post has been edited by Negative: May 10, 2007 - 2:41 PM -------------------- |

Out of curiosity, where would one get a bypass valve that would work on these accord intakes?

ebay.
search aem bypass valve. you need a 2.5". Got mine installed. No MAF hole yet and no codes. When I get back to my place I'm gonna take the part that attaches to the throttle body out and drill it. Somehow while I had it jacked up though it raised the drivers side about an inch. So now when it's back on the ground it's just a little bit higher up on the drivers side. I dunno, but I'm too tired to try to figure it out tonight. And I found no hippy, so I only got a couple of pictures. -------------------- |

I just had my new rims installed yesterday and I think while backing out of my friends drive way, the front driver side tire rubbed where the air filter was pressing on the wheel well plastic lining. It was too dark to take a look, so I'm going to have to check later. Damn bigger wheel diameter
If it's rubbing, I may have to shrink mine to an SRI instead (I also don't really notice a gain at all, just a different sound, and it looks damn cool under the hood -------------------- |

Mine was doing that for a long time and still does it when i turn my wheels to the left. but a fairly good fix is to go to pepboys or an equal type of store and they have plastic 90 degree elbows in 3" diameter. I just attached one of those to the end of the pipe and then put my filter facing toward the front of the car. Like i said it works good, there is no rubbing except for when i turn my wheels that one direction. -------------------- Former Celica Owner... RIP 08-2007

I'll have to look into that. I'll take a better look at it either tonight or tomorrow (at work atm), but I'm pretty sure it did rub.

mine doesnt rub. but I didnt cut off the end of the s pipe. just 3 inches off the end of the L. my filter is pointed in diagnaly. it does seem to be a bit of a difference even over the sri. not a whole lot, but enough that I'm happy with it. just gotta get my bypass valve.

I didn't cut the pipe shorter on the S piece either, I cut it at the end where the filter connects and it still pushes out the wheel well liner. I tried to angle the filter slightly, but it doesn't have a lot of give to it and still rests against the plastic.

hmm... I wonder if mine doesnt do it just cause it's angled. Maybe one of those long but thin K&N filters would be your best bet. These filters are garbage anyway.

Good to know.
Upon further investigation, I don't think my tire rubbed. I think I had a rock in my brakes and it made a groaning sound (at least that's all i can think it could be?) I tested out my car maxing out my turning radius in both directions and had no problems. -------------------- |
