You can run... say 220 ohm resistors... and higher mcd LEDs... say 15000 or so. I reccomend 10000+ presonally...they're a lot brighter, with 220 ohm resistors. As far as soldering them into the controls... heh... I'm not so brave as to try...just yet.

awesome thanks for the info! do you think i could run the leds i have now with 220 resistors and make them briter with out blowing them out ?
Do you know where i could get my hand on some of those leds ? Do you think radio shack has those ? If anyone knows where to get those really brite leds please let me know thanks guys defgeph This post has been edited by defgeph: Oct 15, 2003 - 2:34 AM -------------------- I will return one day. |

Yes you can... 220 ohms is still fairly modest... As far as the LEDs go... the radio shack here does carry some 10K+ mcd red/white LEDs... however, it's been a while since I last shopped for LEDs... LEDs is usually something the counter people know very little about (from my experience...) so good luck with that. Umm, I'm sure there are places online you can order them too, but with LEDs... that's gonna have to be a big bulk order... so look around, is all I can really say. |

Neat job A few questions I have...
Were the standard lights you took out actually LED or just miniture bulbs? Do you have to solder the resistors to the heater board or on a seperate circuit board.? What about the clock - can that be changed to red? -------------------- Facelift bumper-foglights-clear indicators, clear side repeaters, 16in O.Z alloys, stainless steel grill. Wow thanks for all the help. I didn't excpect such a response. I do have a few other questions though. What is the part number for the Radioshack stuff I can't make it out in the picture? Also is the voltage inside the heater control 12v or is it something different. If I knew that I'd be able to tell what size resistor would be needed to get the most out of your led. Also what was the info for the blue led? Was it Radioshack as well? 1.7v? 20ma? 800mcd? The only blue led I found on Radioshacks website was 3.7v 2600mcd 20ma part# 276-316. If only I knew the voltage in there I'd have everytihng I need to get started. All blue is what I'm going for anyways.

I never did memorize Ohms law but I always thuoght that if the number of ohms went up the resistance went down wich would mean more voltage to the led. So if I'm understanding Ohm's law correctly 220 ohms would actualy cause the brightness to go down. Please correct me if I'm wrong because I very well could be. an 800 ohm resistor would be about the most you could put in there if I'm doing the math correctly.

The blue led I used is just like the red ones. I did not use a board to solder the resistors i just soldered the resistors to the positive terminal on the leds and ran new power wires for the the major lights . the indicator lights (show you where the air is blowing out ) little light on top of all the button i soldered to the factory board as well as the ac light no resistors were needed for these lights the board already had resistors on them. And the standard lights are little bulbs with green caps on them. and for my project it seems that the lower the ohm the briter it got so i cant really give you an answer but that what happend to me
I'll post the part numbers when i get home (tomorrow night) thursday night and im guessing that its 12 volts inside the control box but i used resistors only for the 3 lights that light up the whole control box everything else i soldered into the board with out resistors well hope I answered all your questions if any more post them and i'll help you guys out as much as i can and when i get a chance im gonna look for briter leds when i find them i'll put up some pics of the other side of the board oh and i will be working in the clock next will post when i figure that one out sorry long post defgeph This post has been edited by defgeph: Oct 15, 2003 - 11:08 PM -------------------- I will return one day. |

i have 220 ohm resistors on my 3000 mcd leds for my angel eyes. they work pretty good and bright. about ohms law: less resistance (ohms), more current (brighter)
Ohms = ( voltage of battery - Voltage of led ) / Amp of led i think im also going to try the heater control lights with blue leds |

So defgeph, you said that your board has a short in it. Is that something that you messed up on or is there no short at all and could the 12v through the 1.7v LEDs be cauing the LEDs to burn out. That's what I've been able to peice together so far. Sounds like the bulbs with the green caps on them are 12v which would be the reason for no resistors and the other LEDs on the board have resistors so that's why they're not burning out. Assuming I'm correct, which I hardly ever am, you could track the positive trace from the indicator LEDs back to their resistor and look at the colors on the resistor and take the colors up to radio shack and tell them, and if they are competent, they'll be able to tell you exactly what ohm rating you need. Oh yeah almost forgot. the part number for the blue LED you used would be a HUGE help. I'll try and get started on the heater controls today or tomorrow since I'm off work. That way I won't sound like an $$ talking about stuff I know nothing about. Hope any or all of this helped otherwise I apologize for wasting your time.

the part number for the blue led is 276-316. and the 220 ohm resistors are 271-1111 you can go to radio shack they have them.
I did track the positive on the curcuit board that how i got theoriginal resistors but today I bought 220 ohm resistors and 3000 mcd leds I want to see what I come up with this time umm and i caused the short on the board when I tryed to take out the control box (i didnt Know about the two cables) I was taking it apart from the dash lol let me know if you have any more questions im gonna try and put the new leds in tonight defgeph -------------------- I will return one day. |

I know I need to just tear inside and do it my self but I have learned from past experiences that it's a good idea to have all the parts and knowledge of what you're doing before you get started. So.... I think this will be my last question for now. About how many LEDs are there total? in your picture it looks like there are only nine but there are five indicator lights on the top row and four underneith that plus the three that light up the whole box. That equals twelve so I must be missing something. Maybe someone could edit the picture and circle all of the lights and label which ones were originaly leds and which ones were just the bulbs. Sorry for being such a pain I just don't wanna @#%$ something up. Thanks again. You all have been such a help.

a total of thirteen leds that I put in can't forget the rear window defroster that in its own seperate board with two lights I'll try and post a pic of that cause im switching leds tonight so I'll post those pic when I pull'em on the bottom right is the ac light which is cover by that black platic piece i forgot to take that off (right above the orange switch) This post has been edited by defgeph: Oct 17, 2003 - 8:26 PM -------------------- I will return one day. |

ok I'm back once again ! I'm still two lights off but alot briter now.
I will figure out the two lights but here are some pics ............. Rear defroster curcuit board That little red light is the indicator light. It wont light when I push the defrost on pic of the climate control unit and one pic of my new shifter knob thanks to kwanza once I get the two lights to work i'll be done ......oh and I have an idea for the clock which I will try tomorrow........man I hope it works if anybody has any questions please post them here..... I will help as much as I can. Once its finished I will sell the control box you see in the picture above. not just the curcuit board the whole thing except the two control cables. (I need those cables) a very tired defgeph 4:54 a.m. -------------------- I will return one day. |
