ive been running my short shifter for a couple weeks with no issues. Its just an ebay 7th gen shifter. removing those rubber factory mounts made all the difference in the feel of the shifts. and i like the shorter shifter as well. no issues but i cut that one plastic tab everyone talked about while i was in there just incase.

TRD FTW still.

Remove complete stock assembly. Install complete TRD assembly. You set it, AND FORGET IT!

It's like the Showtime Rotisserie.

It may not be the shortest, but as many people know, the shorter the shifter/throw, is not always better...

What holds up your shift boot? Can you transfer the clip for it from the stock one?

Also, should I disconnect my negative battery terminal to do it, or am I not near anything airbag-related?

there is a small white perch on the shift arm that holds the shifter boot up. if you are installing a new arm, you will probably need to take it off the stock arm, and put it onto the new one. if it does not fit, you will either need to drill it out, or secure it in place some how if it is too big. i didn't see where anyone addressed that in this thread.

as far as the (-) battery terminal, you shouldn't need to, unless you are disconnecting anything that involves the airbag ecu that is located under the center console. installing my entire TRD assembly, i did not have to remove this, so i don't see any reason why you should. if you are at all anxious about it, better safe than sorry. it takes at most 1 minute to pop the hood, remove the connection, and get back into the car. smile.gif.

yea i bought mine off of ebay for the 7th gen. it works fine however it wobbles... i'm curious if it was that little bolt clip like someone mentioned a few posts ago. i dont feel like taking it all apart to check lol. its a real easy mod i thought, it just took a wicked long time.
well worth your money

just finished me 7th gen short shifter swap. I am very happy with the results, i do need to grease it up some more, but she does feel one hell of a lot better than before. I dont know what you guys are tlaking about, i didnt have to cut any plastic piece and she feels fine.

you were just talking about the white piece that holds up the boot, mine was big for the new shifter so I had to wrap some electrical tape around the shaft to make it fit snuggly, other than that, about and hour and a half of work and it feels flawless.

gr8 45$ mod!

Installing mine now, but have a question.

For the spring that centers the L-shaped piece, where do the two ends of it go? Does each end go around the little rubber stop in there? The shifter does not really want to center well anymore. Maybe that's why I have to cut that little plastic piece.

Nope, cut the plastic piece, still doesn't center. I have my spring in wrong somehow.

Ok, I got it done. Took me closer to two hours, because I ended up losing my clip and getting something I thought that would work from the hardware store, but didn't.

Anyways, I took a before-and-after from *exactly* the same location (resting on the center console):

Easy cup removal with a cone wrench (from a set of bike tools):

My bottom cup was a pain; it didn't go in until I put my entire weight on it. Also, I think it might be a bit oversized, since it doesn't fit down into the shifter cable connection quite as it should.

Oh, and nothing holds up your shift boot. It stays up by itself since it is too long. You can't get the old white holder from the stock one off, as far as I can tell.
It's a totally different animal to shift now; it is more notchy for sure, but I like the feel. It reminds me of an old buddy's Mustang. I keep thinking I'm not into reverse though because it doesn't go back far enough.

The Mod worked out very well. I am pleased with the cheap lil upgrade. You definitely have to remove those 4 rubbers mounts for it to install proper. Thanx for all the Pics and info all. biggrin.gif

Awesome thread, although I am still confused over which is being used here. There seems to be two types on eBay, one with purple spacers, and one with silver.
Silver
Another Silver
Purple Spacers
Which is good?

People have used both, I believe. I got purple. it's not really the color of spacers, it's the fact that they are thicker than stock (which both are). I don't know that anyone has ever compared the two, but I think they are probably almost identical.

Any more thoughts on this?

I got the silver one. Took me a while to realize I have to remove the rubber things in order to put in the silver legs.

I say this is a great mod if you don't lose your shift nob...

I'm shifting with bare shift-stick. lol
