Looks like you had the wrong tire size to begin with unless the coupe was different.
The US '94-'99 ST had the following standard size:
185 x 70 x 14 - 24.20” (615mm) overall diameter.
The European '94-'99 ST had the following standard size:
195 x 65 x 14 - 23.98” (609mm) overall diameter.
The US/European '94-'99 GT had the following standard size:
205 x 55 x 15 - 23.88” (607mm) overall diameter.

Your speedometer is calibrated/setup with relation to the overall diameter.
(No, I don't know whether this can be re-calibrated).
Also, matching of overall diameter when changing wheel and tire sizes is necessary to ensure ride height and gearing remain the same...that's the "official" line.

You can play with tire sizes but you have to be aware of the above.
For example, I have a 1.6" drop and I will be running 215 x 45 x 17 - 24.66” (625mm) overall diameter.
This gets rid of the gap between the upper part of the fender and the tire, without any rubbing, but means that my ride height is different, gearing is out and speedo reads wrong.
...but what the hell - handling is superb and it looks great!

Check out the Tire Size calculator on the http://www.tirerack.com site.

The tires on your 16's should be 205/50/16. The 55 is for the 15" wheels

So I think you bought the wrong size. IF the place you bought it at told you to buy these, thats their bust and you need to get the right size

i just put my 14" beside my 16". both of them have the same height... is it good or bad? if i change to 205/50 R16, it will be lower (smaller in diameter) than the original 14" wheels.

50s to 55s would hardly matter anyway...you can almost get that much of a difference just by having your tire psi off.
