to anyone who has done a 3sgte swap into a 6th gen...
how bad is that lack of traction now that you are making much more power? do you ever wish that you had just bought an awd/turbo car insted of doing the swap? -------------------- 15PSI - 30MPG - Megasquirt Tuned

It's sorta bad when you floor it. I don't know what it would feel like without LSD, but my traction problem isn't too bad. I just have to launch half-throttle... then once I hit higher RPM's, I can almost floor it in first. In second, it's similar... I can't exactly floor it until I hit the higher RPM band. Once I hit third... this no longer becomes an issue. Basically, I have to ease into flooring 1st and 2nd. I haven't experience torque steer yet. No matter what... the swap made a big difference and made my car one fast beast. Wait till I take her to the tracks... then I'll really open up and see what she can do. I havent driven her with full power, i had a lil issue with not being able to go over 4K RPMs, so it was being forced into easing in the gears. I'll find out in about a month how bad it is.

my question may relate to this topic~~
if I had done the swap, do I have to change a better suspension and stronger brake system?? |

suspension isnt needed but i'd def. recommend a nice pair of pads and some slotted/drilled rotors.

Traction is an issue but the car is still daily driveable. You can still launch soft and sometimes you might chirp the tires or something but nothing bad after you get used to it. Of course this is very light throttle. I don't go full throttle in first (ever) or the tires just break loose, no matter where in the powerband I get on it. 2nd can be a problem as well, especially on a downshift hitting it hard or sometimes not paying attention. One day I got pissed at a driver stopped in the middle of the road with no blinker, horn is disconnected so I revved at him... not thinking, I popped the clutch back out afterwards and almost put it into a parked car when the steering wheel jumped from torque steer (no LSD).
Wet roads on uphill gradients can be a bit tricky as well. - aba |

Better suspension? No, your stock (or lowered) suspension will suffice. Stronger brake system? No, also not necessary... UNLESS you car is going to be use strictly for racing with LOTS of HARD stops. I still have my drums in the rear (lack of funds to do the conversion at the moment), and I haven't had any problems. Now going back to what I said above, I tried testing it out again. I redlined first gear and shifted to 2nd (at 15.2 psi)... and THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO WHEEL HOP for me. Now I don't know if this is due to having LSD... or not. If I were to have shifted at about 5000 RPM, I would definitely hop in second. Again, I've never driven a high-powered FF vehicle, so I can't give an objective review. Hope this helps. |

I know this feeling aba. I'm so used to downshifting when I brake for more stopping power, and when I'm dropping to 2nd from say 40 or 50 MPH... my car will jerk and chirp. It never did this with my 7A. The first time I did this, I was like WTF?? HOLY CRAP... That's some crazy ish that takes getting used to. I pretty much did the same when i got used to it at the track. I all i did was bounce in 1st and 2nd, even 3rd in one occasion. So i just laucn at about 3K and feather the gas redline and feather again, but a little harder.
I hope to be adding a LSD soon hopefully by this summer when i start showing. But until then you will have to show me in yours Kuya Happy Boosting, David |

I woulda shown you at the meet, but you never asked. Next time we meet up, I'll let you run my car if you let me run yours. That way I can get a feel for a 3sgte powered Celi without LSD and you can get the feel for LSD. Deal? |

i think im starting to get a better understanding of what the celica is like with a 3sgte.
now on to the 2nd part of my question. if you had to do it all over again, would you have swapped or just bought an awd+turbo car with the same hp? the reason why im asking this is that i have plans to swap this summer, but i want to make sure that if i do this, then i will be 100% satisfied with spending all that money on my car. i dont want to go ahead a just do it, and later wish that i had bought something like a WRX, GSX or 5th gen Alltrac, to satisfy my power needs. i know we are all in love with the celica, but im just trying to look at this from all sides and not let my emotions rule my decision. Keep in mind that AWD cars will have a better launch, but at higher speeds, they'll start to drag. FWD and RWD will put down more to the wheels. Trust me, you'll be happy with this swap and it is fast. Mod for mod, I'll still smoke a DSM. Now if the WRX were an option... or an STI even... I say go with that. But if you want something that is rare and not very common, do the swap. This post has been edited by kuya1284: Mar 30, 2004 - 12:22 PM |

dont get a scoobypoo(subaru!) they are the mortal enemy of the gt4!
i dont know how the st/gt celica brakes work but the gt4 brakes r the most overengineered brakes ive seen, u dont really need any more than 2 pots (the gt4 has 4) and if used as a daily driver some decent slotted brakes on 1pots should be ok ps wats a DSM? I was wondering, would bigger rims with thicker profile tires improve some traction? Since more power needs to be put in the wheels which would allow the wheels to have less spin and traction loss?
Just a thought... Or is there some way to make a LSD work better for acceleration since LSD's are moreoverly made for traction in turns. |

I know its a little off subjuct from the traction stuff, but as long as the swappers are reading this I've got a question. Did any of you get the AC to work with the 3sgte swap or do you know of anyone that has? I've heard rumors that nobody has...that could just be hersey though.
