Well, Im just about to get my car back from the shop after about 5 weeks not having it. Ive been so depressed by not being able to drive my car that Ive almost given up on boosting my car. So I need some inspiration to continue the project. Post your settups, plans, questions and anything else dealing with the 5sfTe here. Please do not post "Get a 3sgte" comments in this thread. Thank you.

Well, it's not a 5sfTe, but I'm getting my 7afTe done saturday. My car's been on jackstands for about two weeks straight, so I'm anxious to get mine back too. I plan on running about 8 PSI. How much do you plan on running?

I haven't done much to my engine yet, but I have plans to turbo it! I just need to get some money. But only having 99 horsepower at the wheels is not enough for me. wink.gif

Ive got spares but its 2 yellow and 2 green... Check www.thepartstrader.com for the injectors, you can find good deals there. If you got the time junk yards have tons of old NA supras but its going to be a pain digging them out.

Shid, I saw your post and think its really good, great links. I dont think you give the ct-26 enough credit tho.

Ive spent WAY to much on my setup. $500 P&P, $2500 rebuild, $700 bottom end. Thats not including the turbo tools.
When I get the car back I'll give it about a thousand mules to get the rings to settle and then try to finally get the kit on. Anyone running a KO downpipe? I have one and think its going to hit the AC compresser......Thoughts?

Charlie??????? Hows the masda? I want to see pics!!

it's great man, i'm thinking about selling it tho, seeing as i'm moving back to the DC area, where there is winter, and i finally have made some progress on the gt4, it's going into the shop this week for about 3 months, and i was to focus solely on it for awhile, and that darn mazda is so distracting because there are SO many parts out there for it. i'll post some pics up later today.

Make sure you get pics of both the cars. If you come back to DC we'll have to have a meet around here so you can get back in touch with your roots wink.gif

I have 2 of each. There's nothing I'm ever going to do with them so if you PM me your address I'll give them to you for free. I haven't a clue where they are ATM but I'll keep a look out for them.

Also I'd like to see posts in this thread that has anything to do with the 5sfTe. Lets make this thread like a note book for 5sfTe'rs.

So Itchy, how is highway driving with the turbo setup?? I know that at around 70mph my tach is at 3.5k RPMS....so is constantly boosting taking a toll on the engine whatsoever? I would only consider boosting the 5SFE if it was going to be reliable, but that could be a gamble on a car with 160,000 miles I suppose. wink.gif But you never know, it might work fine since I just got a tune up earlier this spring.

I wish you lived closer, then I would have you take me for a ride to experience it first hand.

yeah...its kind of funny how a turbo works.... you could be at 5,000rpm and still not generate any boost. you have to floor it, or give it plenty of gas for the turbo to spool up and hit boost.

Nor did I....thats pretty cool though. I'm sure it eats much less gas that way, and also keeps down on engine wear and such.

Heres another question regarding a turbo setup. If I wanted boost to come in sooner, would I just adjust the wastegate in some way or is that dictated by the turbo itself?

BTW 1bwilson, let us know how your setup works. I'm curious how it will perform and what the drivability will be like. I havent ruled out a turbo for my 5S, and hearing Itchy's sucess makes me think that just getting a well tuned turbo setup might be smarter for me to do....I have a shop lined up who could install it and tune everything professionally.

turbo lag's dependent on a lot of features.. the amount of piping you have, the size of the intercooler; and most of all, the size of the turbo. The best way to get rid of turbo lag is to buy a nice little boost controller that will "learn" your turbo; and adjust the wastegate etc for u

Your not going to get a turbo to boost before its stock time, or if you do its not going to be happy. For quicker boost/ less lag Id go with as little piping as possible and maybe only a 2" diam pipe.

just i good thought if you dont want to get scared with the turbo 5s make sure you restrict the oil on the oil feed cause its to much pressure and seels well leak when you rev to make boost and you get some nice smoke , itchy and myself had the exactly same effect from it and it scares you but all is well just lower the pressure and you should be fine

turbos make boost when the engine is under more load

cruising around, little load, no boost
mild acceleration, little load, no boost
hard acceleration, more load, some boost
WOT, heavy load, full boost

thats why if you look at the MPG rating of a turbo car, the highway mpg is way higher than the city mpg

my wrx is rated at 20 city and 28 highway

there are several ways to make a engine hit boost sooner. tightening the wastegate will make for more boost, not sooner boost.

the less exhaust you have, the sooner the turbo will spool, have less volume between the turbo and throttle body, boost will come on sooner.

How would you restrict the oil flow to the turbo? Is there a certain fitting you and Itchy used to restrict it, or is there some other way?

Also like NEVERSTOP, I would like some pics of the routing of oil and coolant lines too that way I can get a better idea of what works best.

i had to make custom oil lines from the start so i used steal brake line. the rason i had to make the lines was because i have a supra single entry turbo so it had supra oil lines. i just put a few crimps in the steel line with pliers. i started the car to make sure oil was still coming out. and its fine. and has been fine for awile.

what about using the water bypass pipe and the water outlet junction off the 3sgte?? I have them and thing it would work fine. It looks like there is only one extra sensor opening on the 3sgte one otherwise its basically the same.. would have to reroute a few hoses but oh well.. that would take care of the coolant lines to the turbo and would reroute the radiator inlet hose nicely.

the only problem I can come up with it one just a visiual inspections is that on the water bypass pipe on the 3s there is and extra pipe that runs under it that is welded on that runs coolant lines to the rear of the block.. the 5sfe does not have this as far as I can tell so I would have to cap them off somehow and hope It doesnt come loose.

here is what I am talking about... these are from the Toyota Repair manual for the 5th gen so the 5sfe is slightly different but basics parts are the same.

3sgte

5sfe

user posted image

this doesnt help with the oil lines but would help a little. I diffently think this would work unless I am missing something major here.. the only thing I can think of is the bypass pipes not mounting to the water pump.. and the oil cooler lines which run in/out on the 5s where the 3s it runs in off the bypass and out into the pump... see diagrams. I could fix this my swapping the oil cooler and water pump to the 3s one.

would still like to know how the oil inlet pipe was run... like detailed instruct or pic perferably.

i made my own flange from 1/2" aluminum and tapped it to 3/8" pipe thread on the oil return side and then 1/4" on the oil inlet then get some of those stainless steel hose fittingsl like aeroquip or earl's or russel or even a brass fitting from a hardware store and make sure it's pipe thread and bam your done.

there has to be another way to restrict the oil uhmm a valve maybe anyone have any ideas

Looks great itchy! thats almost identical to the layout I have for me IC piping biggrin.gif

Heres what I got done last weekend for the turbo project... basically freed up some room in the engine bay for piping and for the cold air box im working on.. did this by relocating the battery to the trunk.. was pretty easy.. used a set of jumper cables for the battery lines and some non fused distribution blocks for the terminals.. works good but need a stronger battery.. the "ECONOMY" just isnt cuttin it for me tongue.gif

newayz heres some pics

That looks good, Thats the same thing Im doing with my batt. Where did you get the distro blocks? What gauge are they?

My motor is about to turn 500 miles tomorrow so Im going to be doing the first oil change on it to see if everything is clean, no metal shavings. Then its on to the 1000 mile road test and then another oil change.

500 miles and I havent poped a rod, 3sgte rods do fit 5sfe pistons with some mods to the crank.

Edit: did have a ?... I know that if you order a head gasket from toyota now they will give you the metal one.. did ne of the celicas come stock with the metal head gasket? I ask cuz I got a 99 and really dont wanna tear apart the motor just to find a perfectly good metal headgasket

Yea I can get the oil line for 41$ threw him.. but still think I could find a good used one for around 20$

Nice thing is the gaskets are REALLY cheap threw him wink.gif

as for the oil feed setup I really hope it works.. I need to figure out what the oil PSI is for the 3sgte feed so I can make sure I am running the same - think im gonna rebuild the thing though and go with same sized pipe as the 3sgte feed line

The CC is in the way. When I relocate the batt Im just going to swing it over.

As for injectors, there are several upgrades from other cars we can use instead of buying expencive aftermarket ones.

LOVE the sig brian...can i be a junior member???? hehe
anyway, any updates on the oil lines matt? i read a REALLY cool postlink to thread over @ celicatech.com from trance4c(clayton) about how he was gonna use this greddy oil tree to feed his oil pressure gauge because its a much better point to feed from...got me to thinking about maybe this would be an option for us to use as a feed point to the turbo? its relitivly cheap, (about 60 from optionsauto.com) and it *seems* wink.gif like a good idea..what do you guys think...the only thing i can see as a problem is i REALLY like matts idea of a regulator to control the pressure, and i dont know if it could take the heat being in that area. wink.gif
heres a pic of the oil tree
user posted image
oohhh and i got my injectors back from rc engineering a couple weeks ago, i gotta tell you guys, i am SO glad i sent them out, WELL worth the 115$ total it cost to have them cleaned, flow tested and balanced. 2 of the 4 injectors i sent them were bad, one was spraying @about 65% the other wasnt even spraying, it was DRIPPING!!!
they sent me back a nice printout with all the before and after readings, nicely packaged and all that good stuff..turnaround was like 10 buisness days, but thats cross contry via usps also, so i found that quite good.
overall im VERY happy with them, i'd recommend them to anyone who has a question about theyre injectors, or just wants to be on the safe side, like me. wink.gif
:::EDIT after reading thru the bgb, the oil pressure for both the 5s and 3s are the same, they both call for @ least 4.3psi @ idle, and 36-71psi @ 3000 rpm.
the banjo bolt that goes thru the stock oil feed line bolts to the block, (like the top fuel filter bolt)..i wonder if its just a matter of running the same size line as the feed, or of the banjo bolt creates a restriction in the flow...

That looks really good. I like the idea of not having to T off the feed line from the sensor. I'll have to look more into it for my aplication.

I wish Id have gone to RC before I installed my injectors.... Maybe I'll pick up a extra set and send them out. There only like $40 at thepartstrader.com

Sigs are free to anyone willing to hear out the word of the 5sfTe. Dont have to be running one just have to believe in them wink.gif I hope it will start a trend and quiet down some of the haters.

Im almost 3k miles into the break in period and all knock i had at the start has gone away. the motor runs like a charm and is begging for boost. Solid 500 RPM idle

n e one have a diagram of how to run the oil lines?

the oil lines are pretty easy man, the feed you get from the head, the return goes to the oil pan.. wink.gif
you can T into the head with a 1/8-28BSPT T fitting, right at the oil pressure sending unit, the only thing with that is that with a brass T and the heavy sending unit hanging off it, there is a chance of the T cracking on you.
what i chose to do to avoid that, is to use a 1/8-28 BSPT to -4AN fitting for the head, then a 4an to 3an reducer to get to the 3an line size that im gonna use.
since you cant get 3AN hose ends, im having a custom 3an feed line made up by www.atpturbo.com then having a 3an fitting welded to the stock ct oil feed line, and tapping into my oil filter relocation kit for the factory oil pressure sending unit, and adding another for my oil pressure gauge.
for the return, im having a -12AN fitting welded onto the factory line, and using a 3s oil pan with the fitting from www.koracing.net that screws right into where the factory bung is for the factory rubber hose, but with stainless braided.
feel free to hit me up on AIM if you have any questions man, happy to help

theres actually a few, brian...its a matter of what features you want and what you wanna spend...i cant remember all the details of them right now, still actually have some researching to do on the diffrent brands...
but so far, im looking at the zeitronix unit,it runs about 279 or so, and the plx M-300, which runs about 315...theres also the LM-1...and im sure a bunch of others that i havent mentioned...AEM makes one..havent heard anything good about it tho. wink.gif
ill let you know what i end up getting when the time comes, work has been real slow latley (always is this time of year) so the project is a bit of a "holding" pattern right now, cause i cant afford to pick up more parts. but that should change over the next couple months and ill be up and running.. wink.gif
on another note,...i been looking into the Perfect Power SMT-6 www.perfectpower.com its basicly a fuel/timing piggyback...its got some really cool features, like extra injector drivers and stuff, 8x16 fuel and timing maps ect...
i think it'd be a MUCH better alternitive to the SAFC/BTM combo we've been using (or planning to use in my case..lol) and it costs about the same as the safc/btm. runs off windows-based software and is pretty easy to use...check it out lemme know what ya think! i need to pick up a cheap laptop and then i think im gonna pick it up, and ditch the safc/btm.. smile.gif

I like the reviews that zeitronix got on alltrac.net. they have/had a GB going on the unit there also.

With the LCD its a bit pricey but you can get a EGT and Boost sensor along with the unit. Might go with that one.
