my tranny makes a weird noise while the car is moving and engaged in reverse. while im moving and i shift to neutral. the noise stops. it doesnt make the noise if im not moving. wtf? does this happen to anyone else? can it be fixed?

yeah reverse gears are straight unlike the angled forward gears. the benefit of having straight gears is they are alot more durable and you dont get as much power loss, but its noisy... thats why only race cars have straight gears... lots of power to the wheels but noisy as hell!

yeah there is the high pitched noise, then there is a even higher pitched noise on top of the normal noise. it wasn't there a couple months ago

sure it isn't it?
as you speed up the spur gears clash more and just make more noise.
er, spur = reverse

um, i figured they would last a shorter life, but that the engaged a lot faster like, there is no slipping into the gear, just a straight in kind-of approach...

either way, if it is only in reverse and it stops when you disengage the clutch, then yea...id still say its just the spur gear doing its thing

I think its the gear ratio
its a really small one when your reversing to make stalling harder to do.. and plus you ont need to go fast in reverse, but it will accelerate quickly..

ehem, the bigger the gear the greater the power quickly...
1st BIG, 2nd smaller n such n such

it's a spur gear because the regular gears use the syncros, and with it being a spur gear, it makes it impossibly to throw it into reverse when going forwards., but you should hear a real nice grind if you try it from it trying to connect while moving and not being able to "slide" on because it is not cut at an angle like the others.

but it doesnt stop when i put the clutch in. it goes away when physically remove the shifter from the reverse postion.
and its gotten louder in the last month or so. i just really wanted to know if it was going to be a problem. ive never heard it in any other car(other than the normal noise) so i figured something might be wrong.

err if your really worried about it go head and change your gearbox oil for some synthetic should help some.
