i must be dumb cause i cant get the damn driverside axle out of the tranny , its a 5 speed , got the other one out but for some reason the othr side wont budge

autozone rents tools for those, but if u dont wanna go , get two big flat head screwdrivers, shove them in where the axle goes into the tranny. and push the tools towards the tranny, the axle should pop out but you need to replace the inner seal when u do that

you have to sort of pry it out. just keep working on it and dont pull on the boot.

had the same problem when i replaced mine. Pass side went fine. Drivers side would not come out. Finally the thing came completely apart and I was stuck with just the part that goes into the trans. This is what i did.... clamped some vise grips on the peice stuck and hooked the vise grips up to a slide-puller (or whatever it's called). I can't remember exactly how but I took the adjusting screw out of the vise grips and screwed it through the slide puller. Couple gentle yanks and it popped right out.

When I did my clutch we got hung up on the CV axles. We had to pull like a mo-fo on the driver side one and figure out how in the hell to get the passenger side one out with that intermediate shaft there. We had to pry the bracket thing away from the engine block THEN pull like a mofo. In someways I hate this design but I love it because it gets rid of a lot of torque steer through the stability.

you need to use a pry bar, the bgb shows a tire iron. works for me, everytime!

Make sure its all unbolted, there are some bolts that need to be undone - I believe.

Be careful about prying though because that seal is just aluminum and you could bend it very easily. Thus ruining the seal and forcing you to buy a new one unless you want to keep poring in tranny fluid every week. Try angling the CV axle and pushing in then pulling out. Make sure you are careful. |

get a good strong and long pry bar... and dont just pry... hit the damn thing... get as much leverage as you can and just keep yanking. rock the pry bar back with as much force as you can. It'll come dude.

There are 2 types of axles some have bolts, some have a ring on the end of the axle that holds it in the tranny. For the ring type just get a crow bar and pop it out, if that doesn't work use a hammer and lightly tap on the crowbar till it pops out. Takes me about a minute to pop mine out.

when i did my clutch it only took my brother and i about 5 min to do the axels and a day to do the clutch

Man, all those hints are wrong!!
Your gonna ruin your tranny seal if you stick a screwdriver in there and pry it out. Heres wat u do! 1.) Get under it with: Rubber hammer, and a small pry bar 2.) Using the Pry bar position it so that you can knock out the axel outwards. There are these groove on the axel itself where it goes into the tranny. They look like groves that stick out on the metal part that goes into tranny. Thats where you will be positioning your pry bar. 3.) Gently Tap the end of the pry bar and then rotate the axel. And position it again on the groves. Keep doing it untill it pops out! Takes me less than 5 mins to do it. Make sure you got enough room to get under the body and enough room to swing the hammer. When your installing do the same thing and just tap it back in untill it goes all the way in. ** Oh sheesh thread is so old, I should have read the date first DUH!!** This post has been edited by soulshadow: Jan 7, 2006 - 11:44 PM |

this is scary, how often have some of you changed you CV axels ??? i've got to change mine and it's gonna cost me best part of $500 just for the parts plus maybe waiting 6 weeks (worst case) to get them from Japan (remember i'm in Russia) what the life expectency on the CV axel cause i'm thinking i should order the other side at the same time if they go regular ?????? -------------------- Life is for living, and you don't get a second chance Take care now !! |
