so, i've got the two little pinstripes things on the side of my car and i need to get rid of em. i think i read something not long ago about a couple people that have done that. i'm just wondering how to get em off safely without damaging the paint underneath.
thanks |

Well, I think they're just vinyl...so take a hairdryer to them, and peel em' off.

A hair dryer wouldn't mess up the paint, like make it bubble or anything? That would scare me. I had my stripes removed at the body shop when they painted the car.

I don't know what year your car is but mine is a 94 and my pinstripes were just asking to come off. It still required me to be as gentle as possible, I just used a warm rag and slowly peeled off like a sticker and everytime it snapped had to start again using my nail, wasn't too tough and you can only notice pinstriping was there ever so slightly (cause of the paint fade from the stripes covering up the paint) but I think it looks a lot better now.

Why on earth did they put pinstripes on our cars? Bad hold over from the 80's?

I worked at a chevy dealership for about 2 months last summer and they still put pinstripes on nearly every car that comes in to "pro pack" in other words..get them ready to sell..take out all plastic and label and such..on some cars it looked ok..but some...me and another guy made the choice of color and im assuming that there is guys that have no taste at all and put some of these pinstrips on with wierd colors..and we just picked at them with fingers..like we used warm water to help..but that was right after we applyed the pinstripe..over time, I don't know if that would work.

The reason they did this is will piss off any original owner of a pinstriped car. Those pinstipes, I may be over exaggerating a little, but are almost a hundred bucks for each side. The dealership does this to get every little penny out of you. Don't believe me? Go over to your local dealership that has a pinstriped car and look on the dealer price tag list, and look for pinstripe.

When i took off my emblems i just used a razor blade and a hair dryer. Then to remove the glue residue i used some tint-off spray i got from walmart and a razor blade. Very easy and clean look afterwards. Should be the same for pin stripes.

I've always heard that a blowdryer and hot rag would work just fine. There is some stuff though that gets glue and things like that off paint but doesn't hurt the paint at all. I don't remember the name though....I'll look at home and tell you tomorrow. But I think I just got it at the local auto store. It shouldn't be to hard to find!
Shaved emblems are definately better!!! This post has been edited by CelicaGoddess: Apr 3, 2003 - 10:26 AM |
