Hey everybody, i'm thinking of moving to Australia since our country is being flown into the ground and also I can have access to better vehicles (you know where i'm getting at). I know a little about the place but that is because my secretary is from Port Lincoln near Adelaide and she told me a little about it. She is moving back with her husband in 2 years so I might go also. I know a little about the cost of living and it isn't much different from Charlotte after the conversions are done. If I go i'll move to Port Lincoln until I get going then i'll probably go to Melbourne. America is alright but as far as the car scene goes it is at the point that car hoods will be welded shut from the factory. I understand that emissions produce pollution but what about factories and stuff like that. Our Government likes to point fingers at the little guy a bit to much for my taste and i'm about ready to get out. Anyway I could use some advice from anyone there on how life is and what to expect.

I served in the Marines during the 9/11 attacks and i've seen how Bush and his business parteners/cabinet members deal with war. I joined to protect my country not be someones cheap mercenary. Also Australia has better access to good cars, except maybe the Monaro/GTO the US has quality issues with them.

so your moving to a country because they have better cars and because you cant stand teh government here ? That sounds like a goood decision. Maybe you can work at quiznos ?

Since the cost of living is about the same as here and the wages are lower.

Sorry but i'm a little bit over-qualified for Quizno's, but you can do that here. Oh wait nope, baby Bush sent those jobs to Iraq. Besides I want to go some where that I actually own my stuff instead of rent it, try skimping on tax here and it becomes the gov'ts. and you become some cellmate's wife. I'm not getting into a pissing contest on whose country is better I just look at the facts the US has a worse economy than Russia, China, and India.

Hi, I'm from Australia so I'll bite biggrin.gif

However, since I live in Perth, I have pretty much no information what's it like living in Melbourne or Adelaide. (I would suggest to consider Sydney as well)

Though, living in Perth is an absolute dream, its such a wonderful (and isolated) city. Mostly middle-class suburban and rural (and a comparatively small CBD). Probably the biggest problem of Perth is that there is a lack of entertainment around here and finding well paying jobs may also be a bit difficult. Cities in the eastern states are generally better in most regards.

I would seriously reconsider moving to Australia (or anywhere for that matter), if your basing your decision solely on the availability of modified cars and your distaste for the US government.

A few things to consider:

Just to compare, a '99 Celica GT is worth what in America? $6-8000 US?
Try $20 000 AUS here! We have terrible vehicle importation restraints (no private import for any car under 15 years old) and import tarriffs are very high to encourage domestic purchases. But some cars that arn't available in the US are available here, (like the ST205, of course). New Zealand is similar to Australia but benefits from cheap cars (and lush scenery).

Yeah my secretary was telling me that things are different in the North and West. If I make it there I will get a GT-Four instead of importing mine, 96 GT. I was considering Japan at first, but Australia has a much easier learning curve. The cost of living in Charlotte is about $35,000 a year per capita, and the avg. income is $23,000. The income is from the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce so it's set higher to entice people to move here, income is probably closer to $19,000, I made $11,000 my first year as a Marine (if it was a thousand less I could have filed for unemployment). So moving to Australia can only be better since this place won't be picking up for at least the next 4 years.

I can speak up for New Zealand. Came here 4.5 years ago for a 1 - 2 year period to work - now have my citizenship and intend staying for good.
Car scene here is awesome - plenty of powerful beasts for decent $. Lots of cheap motorsport events too. Just look at the GT-FOUR vs Others post I made. Where else in the world can you do events like that on those sort of roads?

My secretary shown me a pic of Port Lincoln and to be as small as it is I love it, she said she's leaving in 2 years so i'm going to hold out until then, hopefully Bush doesn't get us killed by then. The US doesn't do Australia any justice most people here think everyone there acts like the Croc Hunter, you guys need to feed him to the crocs, he's a major stereotype. I might visit there some time this summer, I haven't decided yet.
