Oregon City teen allegedly drove 142 MPH before arrest

07:01 PM PST on Wednesday, March 30, 2005

By ABE ESTIMADA, kgw.com Staff

OREGON CITY – An Oregon City teen was allegedly going about 142 miles per hour early Wednesday morning on Interstate 205 before being arrested and taken to jail by an Oregon State trooper.

kgw.com/Clackamas County

Ryan Allan Champ.

Ryan Allan Champ, 19, was charged with reckless driving and driving while suspended by OSP. The 142-mile-per hour speed was the second highest speed violation ever tracked by OSP.

OSP trooper Matt Klare said he found “customized accessories for aggressive driving” inside Champ's car, according to state police. They did not specify what those items were.

Klare was parked along northbound Interstate 205 near Otty Road where he saw Champ’s 1992 two-door Honda Civic rapidly approaching about 12:30 a.m.

Klare’s radar initially tracked him going 138 miles per hour, but when the Civic roared by, the radar recorded a speed of 142 miles per hour.

The trooper gave pursuit and saw Champ hit his brake lights as it exited off the freeway at Foster Road in southeast Portland.

Klare caught up to the car near the intersection of SE Woodstock and SE 97th Avenue, where Champ was eventually arrested. Champ was alone in the car.

Champ was taken to Clackamas County Jail in Oregon City. Reckless driving is a misdemeanor that is punishable by a maximum one year in jail and a fine of $6,250.

The highest recorded speed recorded by a trooper occurred on June 28, 1993 when a 1991 Acura was stopped on the south side of the Astoria Megler Bridge after it came into radar at 159 mph, according to OSP records.

The third highest recorded speed was 136 mph on Interstate 5 south of Salem in August 2004.

Theres more

PORTLAND -- A 19-year-old was pulled over doing 142 mph on Interstate 205 about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, police say.
Ryan Champ told KOIN News 6 that he wasn't racing but simply wanted to see how fast his car would go. He claims that he was in control the whole time.

He spent the night in jail for reckless driving and driving with a suspended license. KOIN reporter Dan DeRoos caught up with Champ Wednesday when he was picking up his car from an impound lot.

"That's the first time I've ever gone fast on the freeway," he said.

About 10 minutes after the interview, Champ, still with a suspended license, drove his car from the lot (pictured).

According to OSP records, it's the second-highest documented speed violation stopped by a trooper. Champ faces one year in jail and more than $6,000 in fines.

A snivic will do 140mph?

I believe someone was pulled for 180ish on the M25 recently in a 911. I also believe he got away with it on a technicality....

chopper gets your plates, and puts them on the wire, and if you ever drive by a cop at all you get raped.

wata loser. why drive that fast its suicide, and in a civic too big suprise, those things are not ment to handle that kinda speed, even with a powerfull motor, the frame will not take it unless highly modded, if he hit even a small bump or rock he would be in a 100 peaces getting spunged off the road. why did he not just drive to the track sign up and hit the oval for a few hours, he would have gotten some serious respect for pulling those speeds on a track where its safer and legal.

the radars used by the cops here can only record 103 tis the highest they go, not sure why buti've seen it in person, cuz theres one cop that has a personal radar and they tested them one day, i know a guy that is the son of the chief of police but hes kind of an ass cuz he wouldn't get my tickets taken off lol jk he's not an ass but his dad is.i have also been in a car with someone doing 160 and he got pulled over and the ticket was for 103 (the guy only pulled over cuz he's mad rich and he just wanted to show off a 160 mph ticket and was pissed when it was only 103.

They were making fun of how he looked in the picture and the stupidity of driving 142 mph on a public freeway.
