I was driving from my friends house up to my dads work to drop off his bomex back bumper *which was cracked in like 5 different places when we got the package after waiting a month* and was driving in fifth gear just fine, then i stopped, and when i accelerated up to 40mph, i shifted to fifth gear, and i heard a grinding noise when i tried to go, i tried it again, and it still grinded, all of a sudden i couldnt use my fifth gear when i just used it 10 seconds ago. Anyone know what could have caused this? Also, my transmission makes a whistling noise through all the gears, but starts out real soft in first, but then you can really hear it in fifth, i think that might have something to do w/ my 5th gear goin out, but i dont know what the whistling noise is, any help would be appreciated thanx.
also, we're lookin at buyin a new transmission, are the transmissions from the camry's the exact same as our celicas 5sfe transmissions? if so, would it be cheaper to get one off of a camry? how much do 5sfe tranys go for usually? does the whistling start on a lower pitch speed up and move to a higher pitch as u push the stick harder right before it moves into gear? it does this goin into second in my car when im over 40mph if i use a little force and rest it against the second gear position right before it pushes over...not positive but i think its the syco...ur sycro on the 5th gear may have gone out so therefore the car couldnt shift it in without matching revs so this may have caused u to loose the 5th gears...

do you know if it would be cheaper to repair the tranny or just get a new one all together?

Depends a lot on who does the labor. If you pull the motor and such, or drop the tranny urself, it might be cheaper just to get a whole new tranny, unless you can rebuild the tranny yourself too. My guess would be cheaper to go w/ a rebuilt tranny if you did your own labor, but if someone else does the labor, you may as well find a new tranny. But i'm only guessing

guess i'll have to since ive never touched a tranny in my life lol. But its prolly the best to get a new low mileage one w/ my new low mileage engine. Lasted through 176k miles, the little trooper, especially going through 2 of my aunts kids and one of them doesnt give a s*** about anything, so im guessing hes part of this problem im having.

Ok embaressing(SP?) story time:
So I made my own custom shoft shifter by cutting off the shifter. I put the shiftknob back on, but since I just cut the thread off of the stick, I had to sue the 3 screw design on the handle. I screwed in all three screws really really tight (bad move) and everything was ok... I was driving down the road one day and my shift knob felt a little loose, I was just going to plan to tighten it up later at home. I took off at the green light in first, shift into second no problem. I go to shift into third and I can't. No grinding noises no nothing...I just can't shift into third. I thought some piece in the tranny had become bent or something, thus blocking my shifter form going into gear, so I was forced to shift into fourth like a moron. I got home and tightened the screws (only 2 this time) and didn't think anything of the missing screw. This same thing happened to me for the next few days, sometimes it was second I couldn't shift into or third...but finally I got home and took off the shifter knob and the boot with the plastic piece. I see the missing screw is laying on top of the ball in the middle of the shifter...it would push against the side if I tried to shift...causing the problems I was having sometimes I feel like such an idiot -------------------- Speeding is only Illegal...
