there has been a lot of speculation about the apple announcement to move to intel processors and this article was a really interesting read
http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20050609.html just wanna know what everyone thinks - i personnally can't wait to have a dual boot OSX / windows machine - i just hope apple takes into consideration amd sooner or later This post has been edited by reborn0323: Jun 10, 2005 - 4:20 PM -------------------- |

Its neat. I'm a huge apple guy. I really don't know what this will mean for users. A little easier for software companies to port to mac. I don't know if this will mean that machines will be able to dual boot. Both windows and macintosh will still have a lot of hardware specific parts in the OS, so just having a common chip will not mean that one machine can run two systems. There would have to be a lot of messing with the OS (Apple CEO said that wouldn't be happening) or a computer would have to be built with two hardware sets (which is in theory possible, but very tough) basically a custom set up.
Its interesting, but I don't think its that big of news in the big plan. -------------------- psalm 69 |

well if you think about it - windows is built to run on any 86 compatible hardware right? then build a system for mac specs and by default your windows installation would run on the system - only thing i could think would be boot problems but then you have bootloaders on the market already so problem solved

I dont really know much about apple crap but my guess is that they are trying to convert to more generic parts so that people will consider then when wanting to build a custom box, or just a machine that is easaly upgradable.
an example car guys can understand: if civic = pc, and celica = apple take the civic, why is it that so many people fix up civics, there not the ceapest cars (the car itself is not the ceapest i mean) its because of the market, there are millions of parts for them litteraly millions of thing to by at low prices, where cars like ours (6 gens) have very few (in comparison) so in that sence apple wants to try and get in on the huge pc market, if they start using similar parts (interchangable, or close enough that companies like intell, and what not will beable to make parts for then easyer) then they will be walking into a huge market with tons of people, that would now be willing to buy an apple and mod it. I've been using macs since the beginning and switching to intel chips seems like sacriledge. I'm just glad I didn't go out and buy a new mac yet because all the current ones will be obsolete in 2 years |

Currently, apple owns 2% of the computer market. I think that this is a step towards the selling off of macintosh completely; I predict in a few years it will have been bought up and will no longer exist. Intel makes superior processors by far, and there is no arguement there at all. The only thing that macs have going for them right now is their uniqueness. O and btw, now that they've decided that they will be using intel chips, they also made the statement that osx was written with the intel chip in mind... something to think about there...

QUOTE(CheesyLobster @ Jun 11, 2005 - 4:18 PM) Currently, apple owns 2% of the computer market. actually read an article based on some study the other day - 16% of computers are apple - the 2% figure everyone goes by are sales figures not actual figures of how many users have apples QUOTE(CheesyLobster @ Jun 11, 2005 - 4:18 PM) Intel makes superior processors by far, and there is no arguement there at all. I'll argue with that along with most of the experts in the industry and I'll bring stacks of third party benchmarks and test that prove amd outperforms intel in almost every aspect - it's why a lot of people are scratching their heads right now trying to figure out why apple choose intel and not amd answer - it's not about performance - it's about business and putting a hurt on microsoft - i just hope that apple doesn't help intel put a better, cheaper amd out of business and they come out with support for amd chips too This post has been edited by reborn0323: Jun 11, 2005 - 6:47 PM -------------------- |

I guess I'll keep this old school 12" PowerBook for another year or 2 till they come up with a Intel powered PowerBook... but could I stand 867MHz for another 2 years??!?!?!?
I mean, if I sell this PowerBook on Craigslist.com or something, I could prolly get myself 10 bills for it, add another 10 bills I could get myself a 15" 1.5GHz PowerBook.... or should I wait? Use that 10 bills to give my Celica a pimp color?....... -------------------- |
