I have a 95 GT 5 speed. When I start off in 1st gear and the rpm's are pretty low I hear a clank/clunking for a couple seconds up front most of the time when I start off, also sometimes at low rpm's in 2nd gear around a corner. Its a pretty nasty sound that I don't like, it hasn't been happening that long so I don't really get it. I figured it was something with the motor mounts so I replaced the one under the intake on the drivers side as well as the rear one, still having that problem. The front mount looks just fine, so I have no idea. I dunno what else you might need for info without driving the car, but im stumped and I hate hearing this sound. Thanks.

If you lived near me, I'd take you to Toyota(they diagnose me for free because I've been going there for 5 years now).

It does sound like a motor mount though. Even though the front mount 'looks' fine, it could still be worn enough to allow more play than it should. Taking your car to the dealer for a diagnoses should cost less than $50(cheaper than a new mount, they charge $37 here) and they can tell you exactly what's wrong.

i have a similar sound, and 3 diagnostic checks by 3 reliable sources each returned the same source... valve problem.

Hi,

I had some strange noises also from my 97 Celica 2.2ltr in 1st & 2nd Gear at low revs.
Initially it is the factory clutch, Toyota changed it and the noises stopped. If you havn't had it changed or worked on then maybe look at that. Also some Thick gear box oil helps.

If your hearing noise when your cornering also get your CV joints (Steering Joints) checked.
They also make a cluncking noise when the bearings are worn.

Otherwise if you are past the 100,000Km (Sorry don't know what this is in Miles) on the odometer.
Then have checked the timing blets and pullies.
I have mine in for servicing as the belts are worn and pullie can become lose. Not healthy for the engine.

Hope this might help...Cheers

I hear / feel a clunking noise just driving.. I can't find a connection between gears or speed etc.. seems to come and go.. then i'll feel it start clunking.. if I accelerate it gets worse. I popped the hood.. didn't notice anything immediately wrong.. engine mounts looked good... it is possible my intake is bumping into the engine mount.. but its hard to believe it could make the sound and feel I get... frown.gif

any ideas?

It seems to be a constant speed.. I thought it might be my intake but I re-routed the pipe and it happened agian on the way to work.. It feels like its the axle or transmission.. Cuz I do feel the clunking near the floorboards..but i'm not good at diagnosing things.. anyone have any ideas or had the same problem?

Thanks! smile.gif

clunking, especially while turning, is almost always because of an axle problem.

found out what mine was.. the passenger side axle bracket didn't have the 2 bolts in it.. not sure how they worked out.. but it just allowed the axle to vibrate.. so got one bolt in but coudln't get the other in.. gotta see if threads are ok...

I hear a rattling/clunking on low revs around 1st to 2nd gear. I thought it was transmission/suspension related then thought about the intake, before taking it to a mechanic. It was my Injen heatshield vibrating, duh... I removed it and prayed to the celica gods, hoping it would solve it. Problem solved!
