the exhaust on this celica is too loud. WAY too loud. i wouldnt even drive it around residential areas at night because i don't want to disturb people. the guy put in an aftermarket exhaust, and says theres no cat either. is there a way to make the exhaust quieter without ripping out the existing unit and installing a quieter one, or can i just stick in like 3 silencers or something to shut the thing up.

oh ya, i want it as quiet as possible without really hindering the performance. i hear silencers quiet down the car, but also lowers performance. i really really really hate loud cars. like bigtime.

Well im a little confused but if I read this right, you bought a car off someone, and it has no cat and an aftermarket exhaust right? Well.. first off get a cat on asap or be prepared for a huge ticket. Is it a full exhaust kit from engine to muffler, or is it just a muffler? Ram Air on it? Cai? We really should know more to give you a good response, this is very vague

my advice... get a hi flow cat and slap on a resonator! it'll sound sweet! biggrin.gif

btw silencers are ugly... wink.gif

sorry bout the vagueness, but im on vacation right now, and the car is back in town. ill be back home later today though. anyways, i didnt get a good look at the underside of the car because it has a 404 kit and we didn't have time to get a jack to jack it up to see under. he says theres no cat, and the muffler definitely is aftermarket. if there isn't a cat, i was gonna get one anyways since they do checks in the city, but i didn't want to have to spend more money on having to buy a new muffler. i can't really see if he increased the exhaust pipe diameter, so i can't say if its stock diameter or not. and ya, it has a ram intake. ill try to get the car up on a lift when i get home, but the damn 404 kit is really low, so it might take afew days.

your intake isn't goin to make a difference on your exhaust...

#1 get onto ebay or whatever
and get a resonator to weld into your exhaust also
while your on ebay get a RESONATOR with a drilled style core not slotted.....drilled will give great sound deadening with very little flow disturbance.....a slotted like some stocks will hinder flow very badly

you guys that say the exhaust would be too loud without a resonator... do you all have stock headers? downpipes? etc...

I'm still wondering about the volume since the one time i removed my muffler and started the car it was soooo quiet... frown.gif

i have stock HEADER (no s you only have 1)...
stock downpipe....stock cat

removed resonator.....dual mufflers that is loud i HIGHLY suggest keeping a resonator not only to sound better but to not have an annoyingly loud exhaust

i think alot of it has to do with the quality of the muffler.
i have 3" all the way back, no cats, straight outta the turbo, under the rear, and its not at all loud unless im @ WOT.

A thought -- rather than welding in a cat and a resonator, why not get a combined one?

MagnaFlow's parent company Car Sound makes catalytic converters with resonated cores, so you get the sound suppression and pollution control in one, and only have to cut up your exhaust pipes in one place.
