Translator, ...from American to English! Options

Has anybody done one for motor parts yet as I was confused what a muffler was until I found out it was an exhaust! I thought a muffler was somebody who liked a bit of muff (like as in England!).

But seriously. We have radiators, exhausts, HT leads, manifolds etc...in England. In america you call them different things! (Intercooler, Muffler, Hot Wires and Headers etc...). The list goes on and there is so much Jargon. It is all so confusing for a novice like me and wondered if there was a glossey of terms and componants and what they do exactly I could go to?

I would love to know what an SAFC is, or what a ratio meter does and what the hell I do or put an adjustable fuel pressure regulator wirh fuel pressure meter! It wouldn't be so bad if I could find a manual in the UK that covers my Celica in detail as Haynes don't even produce one over here!!!

HELP...and body got some ideas on this???

Hi, welcome to the site

I'm afraid I don't know of any such translator for motor parts, but if you're ever unsure just ask - this is a very cool forum and full of friendly, helpful people. Most members will go out of their way to answer any queries, no matter what they are about. There is also a number of members from around the world who speak a variety of languages and dialects and can translate for you.

You can learn heaps from this site by simply reading the forums and articles. I've been here about 6 months and can now easily translate from american terms to NZ (close to british english) terms

Something else you pick up is the correct terms for things that you may not have known; the muffler for example is part of the exhaust or 'exhaust system', which also contains a resonator, tip etc - in NZ 'exhaust' is also used as slang for the muffler. All cars have radiators which help cool the engine, but turbo cars have an extra one used for cooling the intake air and this is called an intercooler (colder air = denser air = more power). From what i can tell Hot wires is a brand name some people use (like xerox for photocopier) for HT leads.

I see in your profile you have an SSII (excellent choice ). While a lot of the info at 6gc.net is based on the USDM (US Domestic Market) cars, there is a growing amount of info on the SSI's, SSII's and SSIII's. Please add any info, parts, howtos, etc you find to keep this growing. You can also use google.com to find japanese sites on the SS Celicas, then use free online web translators such as worldlingo.com or babelfish.

Thanks for getting back on that and your help and advice. I will pick it all up I know over time.

I'm actually picking up my baby tomorrow from the dealer who imports Japanesse Cars into the UK. So...had to have a little work in the bodyshop and had a CAT I alarm fitted, as in Japan they have less thefts than the UK - typical

Tomorrow I pick Lucile (...my '94 SS-II or ST-202). I had a choice of cars at the time and tossed up between Auto or Manual. I took manual at the time but was impressed by the Autobox. It was pretty sharp but think I made a good choice. I can't wait to drive her properly, and will post up a profile and pictures proper when I get my hands on this babe and have a 'proper' nose under her lid.

I'll keep you posted and would love your opinion when I've sorted it out.
