What do you guys think of the concept of rear wheel steering on a front wheel drive car? Im not talking about 4-wheel steering. only the rear wheels. The front wheels would be locked. There is a car out there that does it. The Peugot 20cup. It only has one wheel in the back though, kinda looks like a motorcycle. Supposedly it handles really well. I know how forklifts handle, I used to drive them. But surley there is a way to do it where it handles really good and is not dangerous at high speeds. The idea has completley fascinated me. I want to try it. I think first I'll try building a go-kart with the set up. I dont know, maybe I'm wasting my fuc*ing time, but to me it makes more sense to have the rear wheels steer on a fwd car. It would have a better weight distribution and it would take alot of the work off the front tires. Maybe even having the car with a rear engine setup where the front wheels pull and the rear wheels steer. Just want to hear other peoples opinions good or bad. Maybe even some ideas that would help me.

Dont know why but I have a mental image of someone blasting down a freeway in a forked lift truck.......smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif
Think you'd find it slightly unstable.

i know your trying to do the right thing for your motor, but this is one of those times where you should just trust the guys who have had their swaps for a while and have done a ton of research into this.

i would think it would be unstable at higher speeds, and it would definitely be weird to drive after driving front-steering cars for so long. the whole engine in the back + steering in the back thing, why don't you just buy like a crown victoria and turn the interior around. then you'd have that setup plus suicide doors biggrin.gif

Have any of you seen the Peugot 20cup? And its not really like driving in reverse because your not going backwards. The thrust scc uses it. It broke the sound barrier. If any one has any details on it or anything good to say then please write.

so I did some reading on rear steering. The most information I found came to dirt-track trucks and such, talking about some teams use rear steering as opposed to front steering because it evens out the weight distribution, and there are less engine components that could interfere with the steering if they break. The downside is a long steering column to make it from the steering wheel to the rear end.

I would say if you want to try it to buy yourself a 89-91 Honda Prelude with 4 wheel steering (it had the mechanical 4ws with the long steering column to the rear and everything as opposed to the later model electrical 4ws that was prone to breaking) and rip out its 4ws and custom mount it into your celica. It would definitely take some modification, and you would have to modify the steering itself to give the rear wheels a wider turning stance that would match what the front wheels do.

I've seen that var/motorcycle. It doesn't really turn with the rear wheels if it's the one I'm thinking of. Doesn't it lean? The back wheel might turn a little, but it's mostly turned by hydrolics making the car lean.

pointless, you would loose control so easy, the slightest move of the wheel would put you into a spin. My friend tryed making a 4wheel drive rock crawling gokart with a 20HP snowmobile engine. He didnt hook up the front steering at first(locked it with loc collars) and with rws, you would turn the wheel the slightest bit and go right into a doughnut. My friend tryed tryed locking out his rack and pinion on his s13 240 and just tryed to steer using super hi-cas and it sucked horribly. Hense why nissian only used hicas for a few years.

Shuts down? Like I know when I had my 95 Prelude I looked into converting it to a 4ws and there was a way the electronic 4ws would shut down at over 55 I believe because it made the car more stable on the highway (you don't really want all for wheels moving just to change a lane).

But then you also have the new GMC 4 wheel steering truck that has it on all the time, but is mostly just for low-speed turning into like parking spaces and stuff.

In all honesty though, I do think it would be a waste of time and money, there's a lot cooler things you could do to the car for what it would take to make it rear wheel or 4 wheel steering.

As far as I know, the electronic 4WS systems on all japanese cars that I know did not revert to front only at high speeds- the rear wheels actually steered very slightly in the same direction the front wheels turned, in contrast to the oppisite direction at lower speeds
