RS Akimoto has spiral-flex intake tubing that can be used to create a custom intake. The sizes range from 3in to 4in and 2ft to 4ft and also insulated or non-insulated. I am thinking about making my own intake using this tubing (3in). Will this work?

Yes, it should work without any problems. A cool thing about intakes is that you can let your imagination take over and custom build your own for a fraction of the price of leading manufacturers and see the same results. Let me know how things work out!

So should I use a K&N filter and buy a by-pass valve?

Hmm I think it might be a while because I am still doing research and reading other diy intakes. I don't know if I should make it because I know that it would be more powerful than any other intake but it might be too difficult. But if I do decide to make it then I will definately create an How-To.

Hey TRDDawg,
I think it would be cool to do your own intake that way you can feel pride in your own work and imagination. Never get discouraged about attempting w/ in your own capability. I think you should definitely give it a try. If you do let me know how it turned out. Take it easy! |

Go for it buddy.
Absolute worst thing you could do is screw it up (although I don't really know how thats possible) and have to put your stock air box back on. This is probably the cheapest mod you can do to your car, with the filter being the only cost more than pocketchange. Why not? btw.. go for the 3inch, because the filters are usually 3, but just to let you know, the connection on the throttle body is 2.5 inch. |

I read somewhere that if you make your intake too big or too long then you actually lose power. Now this might be wrong since the only people that post info on the net nowadays are rejects that don't know spit from oil.

Where is a good place to buy hose clamps and a coupling hose?

Neip.. only way you're likely to lose power is if you give the engine less air than the crappy airbox does, which is unlikely.

I am thinking of buying the 3" intake tubing (2'), hose clamps, and a step hose (ID 2.5" and ID 3.0"). Is this enough to make the intake?

Here's a tip for you.....what ever you do don't fix or fasten the pipe to the engine or anything attached to engine(except for the intake manifold).
Try and fix it to the chasis or items bolted to the chasis, this is because the movement of the engine while driving will rip the pipe out. |

What will I need to bolt it on to the chassis? Also where is a good place for the air intake filter? This post has been edited by TRDDawg: Jun 13, 2003 - 10:50 PM |
