I know this might seem an odd thing to do, but I was wondering if it is possible to disengage the drive to the front wheels on a GT4, sending all the power to the rear wheels.

Ive searched throught the forum and cant seem to find any info on this

Any info would be good, whether it can or cant b done...

I would think no, unless you put in a mr2 tranny and made custom mounts to mount the engine the other way. you would pretty much need custom everything, pull you would need to cut out your firewall i would think. Even if you just got rid of your front axels you would still get the same power to the back wheels. not worth it. why would anyone not want awd?

Thanks 4 the advice, gonna keep researching it tho...

Its easier to drift with rwd than with awd

A futher question: Is the GT4 4WD or AWD??

There is a lever on the back of 165 gearboxes where you can switch the drive between front wheel drive, rear wheel drive and all wheel drive....used for MOT brake tests...not advisable to use for long, but I`m sure you could rig something!!!

GT4`s are all wheel drive - AWD

Possible yes... but if you have to ask this question... chances are you can't do it. AND... what for? Don't say drift unless you got PLENTY PLENTY of track experience...

Why would anyone not want AWD? All-Wheel Drive is terribly ovverated in my opinon. Sure, it grips well off the line and in corners, but it eats your horsepower at cruising speeds and has a tendency to understeer in most conventional setups (not as bad as FWD mind you). I would much rather have a RWD platform with a good traction and stability control for adverse conditions. That way the front wheels are freed up and can do what they are meant to do--steer; lightly and precisely.

Of course this is a Celica board and a lot of the kids on here are bound to buy into the "GT4 is God" hype.

Not everybody goes to the track... most people here have probably never really raced... so there is no problem besides curiosity, and in some cases... pipe dreams. I do agree AWD is overrated and a bit worshipped round here... but RWD isn't that great either. Each has its own advantage and disadvantage... and just because the new cool scene is the drift scene... doesn't make FWD cars any less cool than RWD cars.

Was done with a fifth-gen All-trac, had to in order to free up enough space in the engine bay for the Lexus SC/GS400 V8 with twin turbos this Aussie sandwiched in there.

Damned impressive burnouts, but I don't know how it handles.

Doing it the guerilla way.....don't you just need to weld together the center diff and disconnect the front shafts?

To my knowledge, 4wd cars will tend to have a bias to either ff or fr (correct me if i am wrong) so welding diffs will pontentialy cause loads that the system is not designed for, to do it properly you would have to swing the engine around 90 degrees put in a new gear box, drive shaft and diff, fabricate a new transmission tunnel to accomidate the drive shaft/ gear box and that isnt even touching on suspension set-ups, it would be a big job but would be well cool if someone was to do it!

the rwd cradle from an awd car (like a gt4) would bolt right up....but the torque split would present issues. you'd really have to get a rwd donor car (a lexus or older supra, maybe?) and use a different motor arrangement and trans. the transverse front arrangement with an awd trans would suck something awful. i'm of the mindset that unless you have unlimited funding, you should leave it fwd or swap the whole gt4 driveline and use the awd. besides, if you're looking to build a REAL drift car, it's not going to be streetable anyway, so you'll also have to invest in another daily ride.

shouldnt drift an AWD car anyways, becuase all 4 wheels are supposed to spin together. "drifting" throws this off, and cuases the differential to burn out. This is why you can only tow an AWD car on trailer or rollers. And why make a GT4 a rwd to be a drift car anyways. Considering that the price of a GT4 is already greater than that of a s13, ae86, fc, or you could even find like a 93 sc300 for cheaper. It would just be easier, cheaper, and in the end have a "better" drift car just becuase of the better aftermarket drift applications for those cars. But if were just wondering if it is possible to make the GT4 RWD, then yes it is. The main problem is if it is actually worth it or not.
