well, IMHO the burien kit is a waste of money, it dosent even come with an intercooler.
I would recommend that you first read the thread by west minst entitled "do it yourself turbo from scratch" (or something like that), the list of parts that are recommended for a turbo celica, go beyond the kit first, figure out your budget, what you can afford second, research the topic of the 3s-gte, (a common 6gc swap) it is more reliable and more powerful than a turbo 5s-fe third, I would recommend that you read the thread by west minst entitled "do it yourself turbo from scratch" (or something like that), the list of parts that are recommended for a turbo celica, go beyond the kit forth, welcome to the board and happy tuning --------------------

Well the thing is i live in nanaimo, canada. its really hard to find a 3sgte motor around here.
I've also heard that the swap between these two things is very difficult to do beacause the drive axles from the mr2 have to also be mounted to the 6gc or else it won't work. The ecu and also most of the wiring harness are hard to rewire on the firewall of the 6g has anybody did the motor swap or done the 5sfe turbo kit yet i want to talk to someone with experience. not true, if you have a 5spd GT, then your tranny and axels will work with the 3sgte. it is not a hard swap, the hard part is the wiring, but that can be done. -------------------- 1994 Celica GT4 WRC Edition

you should also try asking around the celica.net forum. A lot of people there have done the 3sgte swap as well as custom and burien turbo the 5sfe. But before you ask over there use the search tool at top, youll find there have been a lot of topics already on this subject.

Heh. Well I don't know if you guys have even looked at turbo kits for other cars, but there are in the price ranges of 3500...sometimes 4k...even seen a few almost hitting 5k. Some come with intercoolers and some don't....and you think 2500 is a lot? lol. OK, well...unless you plan on doing the labor yourself you won't do the swap with only 2500...it's just no way. If you get the Burien kit I'd save 3k...just for the fact that it's 2500 for the kit, but then shipping and the price for an exhaust shop to mate the turbo manifold to the exhaust manifold. Hey, if you can do the mating part yourself, you may have some extra bucks to buy a couple extra things for your turbo setup.
On the other hand, the 3sgte swap. I've been quoted a bunch of different numbers. It all depends on what clip you find, whether it be the ST205 or one from an earlier Celica All-Trac (in which case you get that nice LHD wiring harness) or if you get just the engine from an MR2. Now, just the engine can cost anywhere between 800-1400 bucks...depending on how you decide to go about it. A clip will cost more, sometimes higher than 2k...all depends on where you go. The clip is the best way, then there's no sourcing out parts, which means u get your car back a lot quicker...otherwise u can go with the gnine and you will be sourcing insignificant parts for the rest of your life. (I hope you can Tell I'm hinting towards the clip). Labor depends on what wiring harness you got. The LHD one from like a ST185 or earlier model will leave you with no worries...it would be really smiple to do the work yourself if you had an engine cradle if yuou got the LHD harness. With RHD things gte a bit tricky. I was quoted for the ST205 clip, and labor...4500. That's leaving some margin for error...because I'm guessing they overshot the labor a tad...prolly 4k would be the price in the end. All depends on what you want... Question you have to ask is... Do you want to turbo your existing engine or bring in a low mileage engine that's going to give you great power potential? The 5SFE can only be pushed so far, but how far can your wallet be pushed? It's a tough decision, save the extra bucks and get 3sgte...or turbo your 5sfe...3sgte will give you more power though...too many choices and tough decisions! -------------------- 95 Toyota Celica GT

thanks for your opinnon. i was just curious about turboing the 5sfe motor. I know that if you can get the 3sgte motor which already comes with a turbo is a good thing, but the thing is where do i go to get one of those. I have no idea where i can get a hold of that engine and the whole front clip.
i want to spend 5g max on this turbo. Any suggestions where i can get a 3GSTE motor? |

Click on the 6G Celicas Forums link at the top of the page, then look at feasible engine swaps. Then do a search on the forums.

Drag competition makes a turbo kit for the 1994-2001 integra(all models) w/ intercooler XS engineering makes a kit for the 7th gen celica with the 2zz-ge w/ a xs gtr front mount intercooler Turbonetics makes a kit for the supra 2jz-ge w/ a spearco front mount intercooler xs engineering makes a kit for the 95-98 240sx with a xs silvia front mount intercooler turbonetincs makes a kit for the for the lexus sc300/gs300 with a spearco front mount Drag competition products makes a kit for the civic b-series that has a drag front mount for 92-2002 prelude turbonetics makes a kit with a spearco frontmount intercooler hotshot makes a kit for the nissan sentra that uses a frontmount intercooler turbonetics makes a kit for the nissan altima that uses a spearco front mount intercooler for 2,750 atp turbo makes a kit for the 93-99 jetta with a front mount air to air I could go on for a while, but I won't, I simply dont have the time. why would you ask me such a stupid question like what turbo kits come with an intercooler? all I'm saying is that for less than $1,000 I have sourced allmost all of the parts I need for a turbo setup ct-26 turbo and manifold-a little less than $500 on e-bay injectors- $60 from 1bwilson (not here yet but I trust the man) 3s-gte oilpan from steve bryden(cant remember his user name on 6gc)- $40 7m-ge frontmount intercooler- $70 from a junkyard supra in east st. louis turbo xs boost controller-$130 Turbo timer $60- off ebay thats $860, granted it is not a complete package quite yet, but the price is a far cry from the burien $2,500 I am a simple man seeking speed on a budget, I'm sure many of us appreciate the fact that I cannot afford a $2,500 kit, I just dont have the money. maybe, the parts aren't as nice your burien kit's, but I'll have about $1,000 extra to wipe my poor ass with when I'm done. thats why I say the burien kit is a waste of money, because after you spend $2,500 on the kit, you will spend almost $3,000 intercooled! thats why I directed khanster to the turbo from scratch thread, I was trying to save him some money. --------------------

the burien kit is a good deal it used to be 3k....and you get all the little parts you need, all the hoses, grommets, seals, etc that you need. if you go get parts from a junkyard then you have to go buy new seals/gaskets/grommets/rubber parts etc. and that can be a pain in the ass when you pull the injectors out and have forgoten the lil rubber o-rings for them. it may be cheaper to go junk yard diving, but where i live there is a better chance of getting hit my lightning while pissing on a electric fence while contracting monkeypox from a viral hedgehog then finding any turbo toyota to get a manifold and a turbo from. i have an intercooler on mine, it came off a audi s4 =) with a kit you also dont have to worry about getting custom tubing/piping done either. plus that its all new parts =) if your gonna turbo, then turbo right, and the easiest way is with a kit like from burien.

My point of view is that, since I already struggle to not spin the wheels in first and when downchanging to second, how the hell are my front wheels going to handle the extra HP of the 3s-gte? I mean, I really don't want to spend ****loads on a lsd!
I would go the 3s-gte if the AWD swap was documented (and easier). I have been thinking about this over the last 6 months, and I really think I'm better off saving for an MR2, supra or my dream of a skyline AWD. Can someone who's done the swap comment on FF vs 250hp, and the lack of traction? I've just got a new racing clutch, and I really can't see my car being driveable with all that HP. Yeah, some people think ours cars aren't powerful...mine's an Auto and I kick so many cars in the arse...but I'm still going to turbo cuz there are cars around here that are faster.
And to TurboGT14PSI: Tru dat. Junkyards around here I asked for Supra they hear "Cutlass?" lol. It's all domestics up here...I'd have to source on out of somehwere else, and seeing that a kit doesn't need an intercooler right away, the Burien Kit looks good and then I'll try and find a cheap intercooler somewheres else...ebay perhaps. Besides, what you build, you can never be sure how it's going to turn out. Plus you get these idiots choosing a bad turbo for their engine...like people choosing too big of a turbo or too small and things don't go right. with the Burien kit, everything's there for you. -------------------- 95 Toyota Celica GT

anyone ever thought of bulletproofing the 5s-fe? This is prolly ridiculously wrong juct cuz the guy who told me this isnt very reliable, but is it possible to get an engine chromed? like the whole thing? take all the big pieces and chrome em? the guy said it tightens everything up and makes it able to stand almost anything. he said this guy did it to his eclipse and put an insane amount of boost into the thing w/ a few other mods, but the main thing was the chromed engine. anyone know what im talking about/ going to tell me that is impossible and wouldnt work?
mmm... too big of a turbo... T67 droool... i wonder what would be necessary to get a 5sfe to get the major power outta that thing, i know its possible w/ a 3sgte. And oh, another thing a 3sgte is all awesome and sweet and everything and ends up being more powerful and cheaper in the long run, but some of us just can't do it whether we do mods in small increments or we dont have time to have our car in a shop for the entire week or so that is necessary This post has been edited by Pvc99gT: Jun 17, 2003 - 10:58 PM |

I have the burien kit, and after some growing pains its been great. It is kinda pricey, but if you look at some comperable kits for 'tegs and civics its not really bad. I'd recomend it, and their customer support is great, you're not gonna get that from a junkyard.
Does anyone know if there's a good way to install a front mount intercooler on the 6 gen's. I've been looking all over the car and there's really no good spot to plumb it. Any help would be great. Oklahoma doesn't have the strongest toyota following. |

Anyone? Just curious as to how much wheelspin happens and how far up the gears. Eg.. do you get the wheels spinning changing into third? Also - did you find it necessary to get wider or better tires just to get some traction happening? |

I'm just going to throw this question out there and look stupid, but is it possible to have a NOS kit installed on a burien turboed 5sfe? If so, any predictions as to what kinda HP that would make?
