I finally bought a compression tester the other day, and got results for all four cylinders. Cylinders 1-4 all check out very consistent and even all the way across, maintaining around 180-185psi after several cranks of the piston reaching TDC. My battery isn't the greatest so it may not have been cranking at enogh RPM's to see proper results.

For reference, I wanted to get a little compression comparison going on so that I can get an idea of what people with healthy 5S's are running. I'm doing these checks to determine whether or not to lightly boost what I already have or to go for a newer 5SFE before the project begins.

Post up figures if you have them, otherwise let me know what you think of mine and what route I should take with the motor.

those are normal #s what you should check for if you want to boost the 5s is if you have the metal headgasket or not. that is what will help you for reliability and longetivity in your 5sfte.

Nope, '97+ 5SFE's used a metal headgasket stock from Toyota. Pre '97 weren't however...we'll see what the situation is with the engine.

My intention is if my motor isn't in superb shape, then I'll hunt down a low mileage motor thats ready to take on some boost. I may do it anyway, even though my motor seems to run beautifully.

Awesome numbers bro thumbsup.gif Like I said before, turbo the motor you have now. Perfect it, then swap in a newer 5sfe later on.

That might be the best route Jeff. The way this motor runs now, I'm confident it could run a stock wastegate CT26 with relative ease.

I'm glad I got a checker though, its very easy to do and can be a great indicator for any variety of problems. What were Manny's figures? I can't remember.

those are good numbers. what it tells you is that your headgasket and rings are in good shape. if you really want to test things some more, get a leak down tester. those tell you a lot more about your engine then a normal comression tester will.

how many miles do you have on the engine?

corey, those are solid #s.
after a year boosted, mine were like yours, about 180-182 across all 4 cylinders.

Manny thats good news to me. I couldn't for the life of me remember what the numbers were on your motor. I knew they were excellent though.

High miles Art....like probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 175-180 grand. tongue.gif Thats my primary concern, however the motor runs amazingly well. I've been running synthetic for over a year now and it seems to run just as well if not better than it did when I first bought it four years ago...very smooth. Thats not to say that it wouldn't pop under boost, but it seems like it'd be capable of running very strong for many more years to come.

Can u guys explain the procedure of a leakdown to me? I've been told before as well as read that it will give you a great look into the condition of the motor, but never knew what is involved. You compress air into the motor and see how quickly it leaks or something?

tons of info on leak down testing
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=leak+...G=Google+Search

at 180,000 miles.... thats a lot of wear on the motor. it probably wont last long under boost, even even if your comp/leak down tests are good. if you do decide to boost it, have a backup motor handy (or at least plans to buy one). if your cool with the idea of having to replace the motor in a weekend then go ahead and boost it and see where it takes you. you have another daily driver now, so nows a good time to experiment with your car and see what type of power it can make.
