So im going to be wrapping my 7th gen GTS rims with tires this week. They are 16x6.5 wide. I was thinkin, maybe, possibly, trying to fit a 225/45 tire on them.
http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/f...ze.do&ar=45
Would this work? Manny? I want a wide tire for auto x events and what not. OR, would i be better off going with a 215/45 tire. Another thing that i should add is, i have a pretty big drop thanks to the intrax lowering springs. But they are only 16's. Last question. Currently, i have the stock 15 BBS wheels on there with beefy 205/65 tires on. Would the 225/45/16 tire lower the car more due to a reduced side wall? If so, that would be awesome. Well let me know what you think. Thanks.

225-45-16 tires have a mounting rim width approved range of 7-8.5" with a measuring rim width of 7.5". although you might be able mount the tire on a 6.5" rim, its not recommended and unsafe to do so.

if i were you, i would get 225-50-16. i have 205-50-16 currently.

here are some options,

IPB Image

as you can see 6.5" rim width is not in range for 225-45-16

by the way, are you sure you dont have 205-55-15's on now? if you are running a 65 series (id be surpised with no rubbing on a dropped celi), pretty much any tire you throw on your new wheels will lower your cars ground clearance as the overall diameter will be less.

I think Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra scary to me, because there's a large, out-of-focus monster roaming the countryside.

OK... you have 16x6.5 rims right? So:
1. 225/45 are too wide for this... (16x7 is minimum. see this table... really handy)
2. if you want profile 45, only one size is usefull for you: 205 (205/45 R16)
3. if you just settle for profile 50 you have choice: 205/50 R16 or 225/50 R16 or even 235/50 R16 (edit: all of those tire will drop your car, but more bigger tire, the less drop. However for 235/50 it's imperceptible. Can count everything too)
4. I have on my celica 205/50 R16 (rim 16x6.5) - if you want picture from any possible angle PM me wink.gif

next question... 15 BBC with 205/65 tires on change for 225/45 R16. Yes, car will drop for sure. If you want to know how much, I can count that for you...

well, i actually didnt know that about the recommend wheel width for 225 tire. Thats why i posted! Thanks matt for the info, and ya, they are 65's. Why would u recommend a 50 series tire? just curious.

im just worried that 205 wil be too stout of a tire. espically for what i want it for? I am still researching right now, but arent there quite a bit of options for a 215 tire? also, would a 45 series tire perform better then a 50 series, or is all in the tread/brand.
I'm trying to shoot for a 45 tire because of the lower profile.

just make your priority:

1. not drop your car
2. profile 45
3. tire wider than 205

all together is not possible frown.gif
edit: possible is just combination of two (any)

id go with a 50 series personally because it will fill up the wheel well better with less gap.

i dont think that a fender gap will be a problem. haha. You should see with the 15s on. Intrax was an awesome drop. A++ springs btw. And, i dunno maybe a 205 will be alright, anything bigger would probably rub when turned at full angle. so you just say a 50 series tire for the fender gap? I wonder if maybe they might perform better with the bigger stiffer sidewall? malpaso, you dont think even a 215 would fit right?

a 215-45-16 still has 7" as minimum recommended width, however a 215-50-16 would fit fine. remember though, you cant get any tire in any size you want. there isnt a great selection for 215-50 tires. so see what sizes the tire you want comes in. 205-50 (which i believe is stock size for gts rims) or 215-50 or 225-50 are your best options in my opinion.

just don't want be pesimistic but... I'm affraid you can't find 215 tire for 16R rim... however if you will find that 215/50 R16 they will drop your car for about one inch...

edit: and just for your info: 225/50 will drop for about 0.5 inch and 235/50 for about 0.1 - 0.2 inches... that's all...

no not an inch. look at the chart i put up earlier take the difference in overall diameter and divide by 2 to get the difference in radius (which is the difference in ride height). of course tire pressure and sidewall flex come into play, but it give you an approximation. so youre looking at around .7 inch drop with 205-50 and .3 inch drop with 225-50. oh by the way, if you want 205-50's i might be interested in selling mine to you.

and as you can see by your search, your going to get a few more choices with either 205-50 or 225-50 instead of 215-50

^ true, but i dont think that i will put a 225 tire on with a 6.5 in. wide rim. As you said, not really safe. Im not really inerested in how big of a drop that a tire would give me, more interested in,...... handleing specs. I dont know if i want used tires either. I plan on buying new. But if the price is right.....

please... watch this table... 225/45 is NOT safe on 6.5 width rim, but 225/50 IS safe even on 6.0 width rim...

a 225-50 is ok on a 6.5" rim, just not a 225-45. either way, if you are look for handling, the 205-50-16 is going to be your best bet. ya im not a fan of used stuff either but these have almost all of their tread left, put them on last summer, i have the receipt somewhere so i can find out how many miles are on them exactly. id say $180. just a feeler but let me know if youre interested. just want 225-50's so i can fill up the gap.
