Ok, here is what I am asking. I might be moving to California soon but don't want to part away from my celica. So, is there any way that I can get my Celica to be "legal" there without taking out the 20v 4age? I hate to sell it because I invested way too much on it to even think about doing that. Also, will it help to add another cat. converter to the exhaust to minimize the smog? Please guys I need some information on this, thanks. smile.gif

Does it have to be legal BEFORE it sets its feet in California? If not, the only thing you have to deal with is prolly bribing a smog check shop owner.

it depends where you smog it, some will just run the sniffer

others get under the hood

if they just run the sniffer its all good just as long as u got 2 02 sensors.

and if worst comes 2 worst there's always paying to pass

I hope I can just go with the sniffer. The down side to the 02 sensors is that the car has only one 4-wire o2 sensor. So I was thinking, would it make any difference at all if I somehow splice into the same 02 sensor wiring and connect another 02 sensor 2 it. If it possible and won't harm the car, than i'll just somehow buy another exhaust manifold, drill a hole, and have the exhaust shop weld one of those threaded spacer looking things for the 2nd o2 sensor( sry don't remember what it was called). If all this works, then the car is definitely coming with me.

NONE of that matters. It's not a USDM engine therefore you automatically FAIL. Sorry... only way to go is to cheat.

FYI... the 20V can pass the sniffer just fine with a cat. Where you fail is visual because it's a non-USDM motor.

Yeah I see where your coming from Kwanza. I'll try and find out more from a cousin that live's in Sacramento if he knows any people that "cheats." If all is lost and cant't find somebody, i'll sell the celica here and buy another Toyota. I was debating either a 07' camry se or an suv since I have a family of my own now.

last time i read up on it, you can legaly bring it into the states the way it is, but you cant drive it legally...as for the "country" of cali, i dont know there rules on it.....

here is link to nhtsa's guide to importing....

http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/import/

as far as smog test goes, ive never had to deal with em' before so i cant give no advice to ya there. Im sure though, that the engine should pass, of course following what most of waht the others have posted, but anywho, getting the car into the country is easy last i checked, but making it legal is totally different.
